We have the choice of A) a natural LB in Oviedo who likes to attack and would maintain the balance or B) Barry at LB, which he can do, but is too slow and is better in midfield - plus a 30 minute cameo in a game where all tactics went out the window is not the best way to assess things. or C) Distin at LB. Not his position but has been there before and did OK.

I go for Oviedo. See how he does against Stoke. If he has a mare then drop him. If he plays well, then keep him in

id rather recall garbutt and play him over oviedo

This 3 at the back stuff - just because Martinez has favoured it previously doesn't mean he's suddenly going to start playing at Everton.

The derby aside, the defence has been good this season. 6 clean sheets from the opening 12 games is excellent, a much better return than last season. You don't fix what isn't broken, yesterday aside, and I think Martinez is too smart to tamper too much with that side of things.

Alacaraz was 'fully fit' yesterday, according to Martinez, but Heitinga and Stone were the defenders on the bench.

He did give the proviso that he probably wasn't ready for a game like the derby to be fair.

A Moyes type move, putting your left sided centre half at left back. Keep Distin where he is and use Barry at LB. Barkley and McCarthy in the middle and Deulofeu on the wing, Mirallas behind Lukaku.

A strong move and what nearly all coaches would do. Is there any other team in the world that would move their specialist central midfielder into a fullback position? Trying to think of one.

Gerrard moved to right back in the CL final if I remember rightly, only for 5 mins or so. Off top of Barnet

Barry isn't a specialist central midfielder. He's played a variety of positions, including left back, during his career.

I don't see how you can claim 'nearly all coaches' would put Distin there, and even if it's true, who cares ? Martinez is the only coach i'm bothered about and he made the right choice on Saturday.

A.C Milan, Chelsea did it in a Champions League final, Bayern Munich did it, Juve, the sh*te did it recently with Horrenderson.

Obviously I can't claim that but I think it's right. Distin to left back and another centre back coming in seems like a much easier transition to me.

Fair enough, I'd still argue that most of those were because there weren't any other obvious candidates to play there tho. Do you all think Barry is a better left back than Distin?
