Last Film You Watched

Horses for courses mate.

Just made the whole film feel a bit low budget.

It only cost $5mill to make, so it was a low budget film.
Watch it again, you'll get even more out of it, like I did.

I have found that with a lot of films lately, that the story is there but something is lacking that I cant explain, sort of a that will do attitude

I've found that some of the films/TV that I've enjoyed lately, is when it's a 'written and directed by' project.
It's not always true but, when the writer makes the film it will naturally be closer to what they envisaged.
The flip side is when the writer isn't capable of determining what should/shouldn't be in the film to make it work.

Spot on, it's like the films have become, bland and homogenised, there's no real " heart " in the films and try as the actors might, there's just that something missing.

I think a lot of it's down to " safety first ", as they wont take risks anymore with film making. It's all about turning a good profit, rather than making classy films - look at all the the remakes and sequels.

I do kind of disagree with this. A few years ago, I'd agree but I do think in the last few years good actors have made a conscious decision to move into better films, just look at Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart. Daniel Radcliffe too has moved to films he wants to do. As a result of this, directors and studios have managed to work with 'bigger' actors. Big films like Mad Max have also challenged things and Carol, a film that wouldn't have had a change years ago.

Word cinema has been great, Isabelle Hupert (63) cannot do anything wrong at the moment and there are some fantastic Persian films out these days.

TV is brilliant these days too, not far off an extension of film.

Obviously there is an argument about comic book films etc saturating the market but they can easily be ignored and most of that are not as bad as what was around before.

You're right about TV being great, as that seems to be that's where all the real creativity and fresh ideas are now days.

It just seems that there's been a lack of originality in certain genres of films for quite a while now - horror and scfi for starters. There hasn't been anything original for a long time.

I saw the new Logan film last night and I thought it was brilliant. With the exception of Deadpool it's the best film in the entire X-Men film franchise. It's not faultless and I still prefer the original story it was partly based on (though it's understandable that they couldn't use that story as it was) but still great all the same, 8/10.

Watched Ex Machina on Netflix. Couldn't believe that it had been so heavily hyped and felt the story was a bit crap. I have a real love/hate relationship with Alex Garland, hated The Beach novel that he wrote, but loved 28 days later and sunshine.

Not bad, Quite funny at times and it's got David Yow out of The Jesus Lizard in it so it's all good for me.

The film of the Beach was the biggest pile of rubbish imaginable.

When I went to see it people where walking out lol

These are some that I've watched/rewatched lately.

As Above So Below - co-written (with his brother) and directed by John Erick Dowdle. Horror/Thriller
By The Sea - written and directed by Angelina Jolie. Drama
The Guard - written and directed by John Michael McDonagh. Comedy
The Goob - written and directed by Guy Myhill. Drama
Stranger Things - written and directed by the Duffer brothers. TV series

Not so good example is -
The Greasy Strangler - written and directed by Jim Hosking. Black Comedy/Horror

It started off ok but, got a bit repetitive. If you watch it you'll know what I mean.

Apparently, there is a C-movie classification. This might not get into it.

"After watching 1960s horror films while writing Darling, Keating said it felt "right and necessary" to shoot in monochrome", really?
"Tried too hard", is probably the best phrase to describe it.

Enjoyed it, although I wanted someone to put the 'thug boyfriend of the mother' in his place.
