Of course, he's got to say the right things, but if, for example, we're comfortable in that game against Palace and the game is under control, then I'd expect him to take McCarthy off for his own and our own good with the Derby in reach. Same goes if McCarthy has made a few reckless challenges and the ref has warned him about it: at that point I'd expect Martinez to act and withdraw him.

They do all only count for three points and even on that logic sparing McCarthy makes perfect sense: we can get the points against Palace without him, whereas it'd be more difficult to get points off Liverpool without his presence.

I do hope Martinez doesn't blot his copybook on this one. There'll be a lot of people watching this unfold on Saturday and wont take too kindly to seeing us shooting ourselves in the foot going into the Derby. We've just got shut of one manager who didn't *get it* regarding that fixture, we dont want another one in a hurry.

I don't think it really matters that it's a derby. Crystal Palace is a not-good team that we should be able to beat easily. It just makes sense that you'd want to save your potentially suspended player for the contest against the better side.

The fact that it's the R's puts a point on it, yeah, but I'd expect the same if it was Arsenal we were playing on the 23rd.

Fair enough point. But Liverpool are Liverpool are Liverpool. It's special - over and above the three points on offer....although it's not just psychic gain; there is a material gain too in that the boost from a Derby win is like a shot in the arm and can propel a team on with greater self belief.

It's 3 points and bragging rights across the city. Nothing more. It's no different from a win against a Chelsea, United, City in terms of self belief.

There is no doubt Koné has been treated unfairly, a very easy scapegoat.
He has played only five league games, all of them coming from the bench. 82 minutes. He hasn't got time to prove himself.
