As far as I am aware the kits we buy have never been the same as what the players wear, so aside from them being a little more expensive now (which happens year by year pretty much?), nothing has changed. My dad was treasurer for a club in the 80s, and I got an actual authentic kit given to me
I was thinking about the quality of shirts when I was a teenager. You didn't have a hope of getting an Everton shirt in Dublin in the 80s so it was a case of making sure you had the readies when you were over for a match on the B&I ferry.
If I recall correctly,I think the Hafnia 1983 shirt was £16.99? If that's right, inflation rates since then put that at a staggering £71.85!
So really it's an inflation and quality issue isn't it? The companies making the shirts have cut corners gradually over the last decades( we've had issues with badges and sponsor pealing off in the past too), resulting in the situation where the cheap knockoffs aren't distinguishable from the Castore £75 ones.
Having said all that,if it wasn't for Stake,I'd be buying it anyway
