Just how good were “The Golden Girls”?

The Golden Girls was absolutely the best thing to move me from watching the tv and doing something. I suspect putting it on 24 hours a day across all channels and making kids have to watch an episode for every hour spent online gaming would halt the childhood obesity epidemic. And instead of a sugar tax, make watching an episode a condition for buying pop or sweets.

Truly awful show. Love the thread though.

Was different - for one season - just. Then flogged the original joke(?) to death for the other 6
And who don't like Betty White
Not too sure about the beanpole Jack Benny Impersonator or the other two stereotypes

Unsurprisingly, has not stood the test of time, though not many do tbf.

My memory conflates this show with Maude and Soap. I recall Maude was a character introduced in an episode of 'All In The Family'...(now there was a show!).
I liked Betty White in The Mary Tyler Moore Show.
But I'm struggling to recall much special about the Golden Girls, though wasn't the actress who played the oldest of the old biddies actually the youngest in real life?*

*by-the-by: Clive Dunn who played Corporal Jones was (aside from Ian Lavender - Private Pike) the youngest of the Walmington-on-Sea platoon

The best in an era of buddy-buddy shows. It could verge on the schmaltzy but you can say that about much of TV comedy.
The tall one had a good line in Jack Benny sarcasm. The slow burn.
