Joel Robles

I've seen most of his games in person this season and I just don't think he's a top bracket goalkeeper

Don't get me wrong, he's a'ight, but nothing more IMO

He's less shaky on crosses than Howard and commands his box better, but his distribution is poor and he's guilty of bad decision making from time to time

If we are getting proper investment and giving the manager an actual decent war-chest for the summer, then I think there are better goalkeepers out there than Joel who we should be looking at

Again, I've been saying this for a long time, as my previous posts in this thread will show

His distribution is really good! I have never understood that point of view.

Of course there are better goalies around. Joel is still very young in goalie terms and learning all the time. If we can get a top goalie in then great. If not then Joel will just have to learn on the job which is fine as he does a good job more often than not.

I wouldn't question your consistency mate, just wanted to know your reasoning.

Disagree about distribution. He wasn't great last time but his throws are brilliant. And his kicking too when it comes to counter attacking at least. Perhaps I just really enjoy a keeper who doesn't go down clutching the ball like Howard, but instead immediately looks for the counter.

I do think consistent decision making is his weakest point, but I think that's something that can improve in keepers. Especially younger ones.

Again, I'm not saying we should cull the lad

I think he's fine as back up and wouldn't be worried to see him in the team if the first choice keeper went down

But I think we should be looking for a higher standard when it comes to our first choice keeper

If we keep Martinez on, a good keeper is essential in order to try and offset the defensive frailties that come with having Martinez in as our manager

We surely won't though. And if we do, we'll have bigger problems than the keeper! Even with Neuer I think we'd still struggle.

We'd need someone of that calibre if he does stay on and refuses to get a new defensive coach in

A new manager might get the best out of Robles, but I still think we should look at getting a Top GK if Moshiri opens the purse strings

It's a shame Butland signed that new 5 year deal before we had a chance to go for him in the summer window

Hadn't realised just how inexperienced he was before he arrived. We've looked a lot more stable at the back since he's replaced Howard and at the moment I can't see why it would be that big a gamble to let him develop. Top level keepers aren't that easy to find. And he may be one.

Honestly think Roberto's a goner.

Which kind of makes transfer discussions somewhat null and void. Would all hinge on the new manager and his style. Even keepers can suit (or not suit) certain styles of football. I'd like to see if Joel can kick on before we replace him though. But if we do then hopefully we'll look to Germany.

His distribution is bad?

I'd say that he is way better than most and is a natural footballer. Especially bearing in mind that
Lukaku stopped jumping for balls around Xmas.

Lets get a top keeper?

Sure, De Gea, Butland and Lloris are out. So who else is clearly much better than Joel?

He will follow Roberto out the door I reckon.

I'd like to keep him as back up behind a new keeper. I feel he always has a mistake in him, like Howard did.
All keepers have mistakes in them. I haven't seen him make many and he's still young and improving. He ticks all the boxes for me. With a solid defense and midfield ahead of him we'd be fine.

I think hes done well since hes come in, the defense looks a bit more solid, sure theres been the odd mistake but hes a young fella learning the game.

Jack Butland, who a few people would be happy to spunk 30m on has made a good few mistakes in his time as well, all keepers make the odd error now and again.

We clearly need another Keeper and its difficult to say what will happen with regards the manager, but I think hes done ok so far, not amazing, but I like the fella.

Very good game tonight. Some good saves and some very good takes frm balls into the box to relieve the pressure. Good lad
