Joel Robles

I'm not sure yet how good he could be, but he's doing fine and he's improving, and doing so in a side bereft of confidence and organisation right now which can't be easy
Agreed. We all know we need a new keeper it is just the jury is still out whether it is someone to challenge Joel or be his apprentice.

If we've got a reasonable amount of money to spend and are aiming high then a new keeper could be beneficial, but it's not paramount... yet.

You must seriously have been watching a different game.

Speaking of saying things 'despite the evidence', why don't you take a look at the following link.

http://epl.squawka.com/english-barc...rd-vs-everton/matches#player-joel-robles-1547

He had a pass completion rate of 25%.TWENTY FIVE PERCENT. Three quarters of his passes failed to find one of our players. If you don't believe that's atrocious, you have incredibly low expectations of a professional footballer.

When you boot a ball up as a goalie its aimed in a general direction not to a players feet.

What are you expecting? Lazer guided hoofs up the field to players feet.

A lot of those "misplaced" balls will be due to the likes of Lukaku not being able to win a header ever.

Judging a goalkeeper on his passing is such a simplistic and bizarre thing to do.

To be fair his distribution is normally good. Certainly when it comes to starting counter attacks. Some of those would have been clearances from Joel under pressure too.

But clearly he had a poor game distribution wise. Just don't think distribution is one of his weaknesses normally. I'd actually call it a strength most games.

As for the goal Stones was foolish to pass back but once he'd decided to why didn't get play it on the ground? Joel isn't Pienaar, if you're going to give him the ball under pressure then give him the simplest pass possible.
I agree. I wasn't saying his distribution is bad generally, but it was utterly hopeless on Saturday. I hadn't seen the stats until I looked it up to reply to the previous post, I just knew it had been awful from being at the game.

As I said earlier, I don't think he's s bad keeper at all, but I disagreed strongly that he had a good game on Saturday. I think he should have taken care of the pass that led to their goal, put us under pressure with his distribution and should have claimed a couple of crosses where he stayed on his line. He made a couple of good saves but I'd have given him 6 out of 10 for Saturday. That's no big deal, it's more than I'd have given 1 or 2 others.

I'm not judging him on his passing. I was merely pointing out that it was poor on Saturday, which it unquestionably was.

Passing is important whoever is doing it, and giving the ball away 75% of the time obviously has an effect on how the game pans out. As I mentioned above, my original comment wasn't based on the stat, I found that later. I was commenting on what I saw with my own eyes, with numerous long kicks out to deulofeu, who obviously wasn't winning any of them, and a fair few which didn't get within 10 yards of one of our players.

There's some very precious people on this subject by the look of it. I've made it clear that I think he's a decent keeper but it looks like some people aren't happy unless we all pretend he's the reincarnation of lev yashin. Very strange.

Good post, but disagree about the goal. Stones has done this before and there was absolutely no need to pass it towards Joel, should have just cleared it himself. Instead he played an unnecessarily difficult pass and put the keeper under pressure. Joel could have done better with the clearance but even then, it wasn't a penalty, it was a corner. And yet again the players don't know how to deal with corners. That's the real issue.

I have a very simple outlook on a goalkeepers talents which is. Can he stop shots and command his area. I think at the moment he is doing OK on both counts, not outstanding but OK. I'm sure we could go out and spend a load of cash on a new number 1 but I'd rather the money be spent elsewhere and for Joel to be given a fair chance. If he doesn't perform over say the first half of next season then bring someone in in January.

Not the best keeper we have had. Still prefer Tim Howard even though he's on his way out, but big Neville south all was my fav, a brilliant goalkeeper. Robles has had a few good games this term, but perhaps we need to bring in more defenders and replace the goalkeeper at the same time!

Oh don't get me wrong, Stones made an almighty mess of the situation in the end, but I thought Joel could have come out and got it, or made himself available for a first time backpass. He came half way and then started backpedaling for no obvious reason. I also think it's fair to say that if Howard had been in goal plenty would have been moaning that the corner went straight through the 6 yard box without him getting anywhere near it. I don't blame him by the way, just think it's a sign of how some people view the goalkeeping situation.

Its important if he is passing it around the back and giving it away, of course it is. If you are taking goalkicks etc into account then its not an accurate representation. Lukaku hasnt won a header for weeks, thats not the keepers fault if he is putting it in the right area.

I completely agree. As i've tried to make clear though, he wasn't putting it in the right area on saturday - hence my original point. His distribution is usually ok, but it wasn't this week. That's what I was commenting on.

Timmy would have never saved those two great strikes Joel finger tipped away on Sat - the one in the last minute saved us from defeat!
An amazing deflected shot save his 6-6 ft presence is helping , but the team have slumped our manager should have had Joel in 18 months ago!

You keep saying that this is your opinion and you're sticking to it.

Why? Robles has not played badly, sometimes well and behind a defence that is afraid to head a ball.

He's done okay, but I think if we can afford to, we owe it to ourselves to go and get a bonafide World Class GK this summer

Robles is fine as back up, but he's not a first choice keeper for a club with ambitions of competing for the top spots IMO
