Joel Robles

To the first point. Playing for a Premier League team means what? Whether it is Wigan or Man United, it's what you do in goal.

Brad Jones has played for those lot across the Park in the Premier League: would I want him? No. Al-Habsi played for Wigan for ages? Mingolet?

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I agree that reactions, agility and quick reflexes are important. Yet, it's the mental attributes which apply these.

It was not about saving the penalties, it was how he appeared to prepare and apply himself during these penalties.

Adrian looked composed and prepared, as if he was confident that he would save them.

On the other, during the penalties he looked sheepish. His attempts were equally poor. I am not denying Robles had a good game, as he did.

Yet, penalties are about your judgement and composure. If you can't apply them then, arguably how well will transfer to the rest of the game?

You said yourself as a season ticket holder, people at the game talk about distribution and lack of command. I'm have a S/T and travel away.

I see the same. Poor distribution and not commanding your area, which goes straight back to judgement and having the footballing brain.

Regardless of how of a reflex keeper you are, if you do not have the brain you will make mistakes. Really, we could be talking about Howard here.

For me a great keeper has an aura or presence about them. You feel as if you can rely on them. Can you see Robles being like that?

I see him being a good enough shot stopper, but making far too many mistakes and lacking the composure to push on.

Yes great keeper do have a presence about them. That comes from confidence, which he is lacking at the moment. With playing in the PL, I was just trying to show, given a run of games, he has shown he can produce the goods. Can he get his confidence back? I certainly hope so. Will he go down as one the the greats? Only time can tell. To answer your question, doubt he will ever be call one of the greats, but at the moment, if he can carry us for a while and get a few clean sheets, which we are seriously lacking this season, I can live with that for the moment. With Howard not only off injured, but playing crap before he did get injured, I certainly hope Robles gets his mojo on, and pretty sharpish.

He wasn't ahead of De Gea at youth level for nothing.

He was. Joel is not older than De Gea. They have the same age(born in 1990).

They were both in the 'Cadete A' team and Joel was the starter. After that they went to two different teams, Joel to 'Juvenil A'(main juvenil team) and De Gea to 'Juvenil B'.
Then things changed.

I think his biggest asset is his size. Like all the best keepers, he looks imposing in goal whereas Howard doesnt. I think this is massively important, especially in one on one situations as it makes strikers try to push the ball further into the corner, forcing mistakes. We have already seen the benefits of this against city (Nasri + Navas both missed easy chances I think), and against West ham.
I agree with this. Next step is to get that confident, fearless look on his face with more confidence. At the moment he looks like he has done one in his pants every time the camera shows him...particularly during the penalty shoot out.

Give the lad a chance, some world class saves the other night. Unless we get someone in
this month then he is our only choice for the next four weeks at least. I really hope he kicks
on and becomes our #1.

Howard used to be good in his prime. Now he's getting older and isn't as good.

Joel used to be unreliable and nervy when he was young.
Now he's getting older and is getting better.

...and thanks for reminding about that Frazier Campbell moment :( God that was embarrassing.

Joel is probably doing better just because his behind isn't planted on the bench for months on end. Likewise Howard probably didn't get old overnight as most keepers are usually functional well into their 30s. After all Howard probably had his best season last year and had an excellent WC. It probably has more to do with the defensive set-up (just look across the park, Mingolet didn't get awful overnight, he just has Lovren, Gerrard and their defense of misfits). We aren't getting exposed on the flanks like we were at the beginning of the season plus we are defending corners better (just giving up way too many). Barry has admittedly also been a bit better the past couple weeks and Stones is back. When Howard comes back it would probably be wise to give Joel a start or two just to keep him up to speed.

Personally I think people are over hyping Howard's performance at the world cup. The game against Belgium, was it 15 saves ? ..... I would have expected him to save most of them tbh, he's a keeper at the end of the day.

The side was kind of built around him. Pack the defense, don't let a cross in (plus US defenders have always been good at corner/free kick defense) and let him handle the long range and the one v. one shots which he is good at. It actually almost worked. DAMMIT WONDO.

No one has over hyped it at all, they just gave him the credit where it was due, for his performance on that day.

The only 0.000004% of comfort from this game is that he done well. That offside save was quality. First clean sheet. Hope he has a glass of shandy to celebrate that because it's another step in the right direction for him.

Clean sheet and good save when he didnt know it was offside.

Maybe the greatest keeper we've ever had.

Believe he kept De gea outve the team in his youth days too, and he grew pyabs before him
