Everton Alumni Joe Royle

….privileged to watch him play plenty, he had great ability to jump early and ‘hang’ which made him terrific in the air. Technically very good, he played against some really tough defenders but he was one of the best.

Fine player/manager on the pitch, gentleman off it. Proper old school Evertonian, he’s everything that’s good about our club.

A little before my time, so not a lot of memories.

I had Teddy bears called Colin, Brian and Joe, with Joe being the biggest. Just seemed to this 4 year old that Joe Royle was a giant...well they all were!!

My earliest clear football memory was of him scoring four against Southampton in that 8-0 win in 1971. Sadly the rest of that season and the 70s were pretty grim after the heights of 69/70.

Bally was sold the following month breaking my heart, and we finished 15th.

Joe missed 14 games and scored just 9 compared with 17 in 40 games and 23 in 42 the previous two seasons.

....and of course he is the last manager to win a decent trophy for this Club.

A complete no 9 - & we sold him at the age of 24 years old due to injury - he went on to do very well with City & regained his England cap - the Latch who he was replaced by stated he felt we should have kept him as a player only 11 games they played alongside each other - he replaced the Latch as England's no 9 - two different style no 9s - Joe worked his socks off - The Latch was a goal predator - their partnership may have worked well .... sad to see him go as my hero at the time .... Happy Birthday big Joe & thanks for the memories ....

A great manager too ....

The best manager we have had since Howard Kendall and one of the best English managers in the last 30 years. He won one trophy but you could probably count it as two now as everyone seems to include the charity shield as a trophy these days.

As mentioned he never lost a derby game and won at Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea away and was a late Unsworth own goal away from winning at Old Trafford as well. He was responsible for one of the best displays of any Everton team since the 80's, when we beat Tottenham 4-1 in the FA Cup semi.

A good manager, a great bloke and one of the best Evertonians ever.

I remember when he came in as manager, I wasn't a fully fledged Evertonian before then, but I had watched "The Official History of Everton" VHS several times by this point and Joe featured in his playing career. The club was at a low ebb with Mike Walker as the outgoing manager, we hadn't won any of the opening 12 games of the season when Joe came in, here was a guy I recognised (from the VHS) and someone who was talking about Everton in a passionate, positive way. He won his opening game 2-0 against the scum, with big Duncan scoring and Joe guided us to safety and the FA Cup.
Then we signed Kanchelskis in the summer and finished 6th in the 95/96 season. But by the 96/97 season things were not going well, Kancheskis left in the January, We had a lack of fit midfielders, sometimes naming 6 defenders in the matchday squad or playing Graham Stuart on the wing. Royle wanted to sign Flo and Eftevaag from SK Brann and to re-sign Barry Horne from Birmingham, but the chairman wasnt keen and Royle left by mutual consent with 8 games to go. It was a sad end.

But whenever he speaks about Everton he always talks with pride and passion and he has been involved with the club, as a coach, scout and even as Duncan's assistant for his short caretaker spell. The man is a true Evertonian. If the club are going to have two statues at the ground I would like him to be one of them. He won the league as a player in 69/70 and the FA Cup as a manager 94/95
