JJB Sports has become the latest high street retailer to cease trading after administrators closed 133 stores yesterday, with the loss of 2,200 jobs.

The extent of the job losses and the abrupt store closures were worse than many in the City had expected.

Administrators from the accountancy firm KPMG managed to save only 550 jobs by selling 20 JJB Sports outlets to Mike Ashley's Sports Direct. There had been hopes that Mr Ashley, who owns Newcastle United football club as well as 71 per cent of Sports Direct, might have bought 60 stores, which could have saved up to 1,500 jobs. But he paid £23.8m for just 20 stores and the JJB Sports name, as well as its Slazenger Golf brand licences.

The cash will be used to pay some of JJB Sports' debt, leaving shareholders, which include the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, with nothing.

The JJB Sports name will cease to exist because Mr Ashley plans to rebrand the stores as Sports Direct as part of the deal.

JJB Sports' demise follows a string of other collapses, including the games retailer Game Group, fashion chain Peacocks and Clinton Cards.

Staff were left in shock as they were made redundant immediately when the administrators decided against continuing to trade in the coming weeks and the company was in effect wound up.

JJB Sports' collapse follows a golden summer for sport in Britain with the Olympic Games, but the ailing high street retailer saw sales continue to slide as it failed to adapt to the digital age.

The company raised £30m in extra funding as recently as four months ago from the US chain Dick's Sporting Goods and other investors.

JJB Sports put itself up for sale on 30 August, but there was little interest from potential buyers and the shares were suspended on 24 September, before its final collapse yesterday.

Feel for the lids and lasses who have lost jobs, but koff Whelan.

This is big news isn't it? It's been years since I've been back home, would JJB be the biggest sports retailers in the UK? What other options are there for consumers?

My first job after uni was at JJB.

Ended up staying 3 years FFS and ended being Steve Round. I mean assistant manager.

Made some good friends there. But Dave Whelan is a massive tit, and even back when I worked there it was a terribly ran company. Surprised it lasted this long to be fair.

Sports Direct, Mike Ashley's company. It's cheap and the stores are usually quite big. I used to go to JJB when I was younger but switched to Sports Direct as it was generally better value for money anyway.

Still a shame that it's out of business though.

Over 2000 jobs? Yep. No problem with a recession here!

BUT LOOK A RYDER CUP!

I feel for the people who have lost their jobs, but really couldn't care less about the business itself. It was run incredibly poorly by the people who bought Dave Whelan out. They actually sacked people in order to continue paying the costs on their priate helicopter at one point a few years ago. IMO, if a business is a good well run business, it will survive, if not, it wont.

Plus I will never forgive them for the answer I got when I asked about the availability of Everton shirts (which after looking for a good while, I found hidden behind a few Arsenal away shirts) the answer I got was, we focus more on the local teams as we have a higher purchase rate from those. I live in Warrington.

So, for me, I couldn't give a toss, but I hope the staff get new jobs.

I used to work in a local independent sports shop in the early 90's we would sell everything from individual studs for your boots & dart flights up to Addidas World Cup which were the best boots money could buy at that time. Sadly a massive JJB opened around the corner and the family owned business which I worked at and had been running for 30 years closed down with the loss of 15 jobs and the family home of the owners.

I'm not laughing at any one of those 2000 people who have lost their jobs, I just hope the owners are feeling the pinch this morning and realise what goes around comes around ( although I appreciate Dave Whealan sold out a few years back)
