Jimmy Harris RIP

I grew up in the shadow of Goodison Park and the players would often walk past our house to training, no fancy cars in those days. My Mum would be on the doorstep rocking my pram and some of the players would stop and talk to my Mum including Jimmy Harris, who was her favourite as she recounted many a time as I grew up. Fast forward to the eve of the 2009 Cup Final v Chelsea, sat outside the hotel having a few beers and 2 gentlemen come over and start chatting to our group. Turned out it was Jimmy and another ex player, Ray Parnell. I told him about the story about my Mum and I asked would he mind talking to her on the phone, not a problem was his response. Phoned Mum and they had a good 15 minute chat together, she was thrilled. So thanks Jimmy for making an elderly lady very happy that day. RIP

RIP Jimmy,I may be wrong but I think he was the second oldest serving ex player behind Billy Bingham?

….I think this was only mentioned the last few days in the old pictures thread.

RiP Jimmy Harris, you will always be one of ours;

Great photos, I never met him until he was older so the older pics but with dark hair are how I remember him. One of those players I’ve always kept an eye out for , and there have been the odd article about him in recent years.

My memories of Jimmy‘s were from the training sessions I went to that he ran in Birkenhead . One time as we were about to start , in walked a regular in immaculate white socks, blue shorts , orange t shirt with like a sleeveless coloured Fair Isle jumper over the top. We were speechless , and Jimmy broke the silence with “ Bloody hell, it’s Hans Christian Anderson !” . That must have been 45 years ago when he would have been mid 40s , the things you remember!

I’ll always remember Jimmy as a speedy striker who also played on the wing, when Dave Hickson came back to the club, a very good player who replaced my idol Dave Hickson when he went to Aston Villa and on the day Dave came back with Villa Jimmy scored the two goals that beat Villa.

Jimmy was sold to Birmingham City not long after Alex Young joined the Blues and he enjoyed a good spell with them. I used to chat with him in the Upper Bullens Road stand and he was still going upto about three or four years ago with his grandson, I think, and he was still a keen Evertonian who knew the game and wasn’t frightened to air his views, played for England U23’s in one game which was shown on TV, just the second half. He worked for Vauxhalls in Ellesmere Port after he finished playing football.

When he started his Everton career as a young player I think he was one of four Harris’s on the books, Brian who played in the 1966 cup final, Joe who was a winger from Bootle who played a few games when we were in the 2nd division and Albert who was a goalkeeper who also had a few games for the Toffees,

Jimmy was a major player for us when I was a boy and scored a lot of goals. I was allowed to go to Birmingham on my own
in the late 1950's and he put us one up in a 2-2 draw. I mention that because he wouldn't have known he would play for them soon.

Oh, and he was better looking than Andre Gomes. Rip, Jimmy.

….definitely a handsome young man. I think he won the League Cup with Birmingham in the 1960s.
