But that wasn't his job.
That's what people don't seem to understand about Gana. He has one specific role, and he is exceptionally good at it.
As for his ball retention, it was very good. He plays in a role where if he does lose the ball then it's very noticable - but if you compare him statistically (and to be honest with your own eyes) to others who play his role, he was remarkably good at keeping it.
We're going to miss him, and Gbamin will be a success if he's three-quarters as good as Gana. There's no point trying to rewrite history.
He a footballer that plays in midfield, but passing the ball forward isn’t his job. Come on mate does us a favour.
I’ve criticised his passing in the past and his ability in the final 3rd. And I would get told that’s not his job, he’s s defensive midfielder, when really he isn’t. He doesn’t sit in front of the 2 CB’s that’s what a defensive midfielder looks like to me.
Fir probably 2/3rds of his time at Everton he had a Schneiderlin or a Barry( 1st season) doing the holding role. So he definitely had a bit more freedom to go forward.
We’ve all seen it loads of times in the last 3yrs, where he would get to the edge of the box and have a really poor shot or panic and play the wrong/misplace the pass. Or hold onto it to long that he losses possession.
You can’t use starts to say he was a world class tackler/recoveries pressing the opposition. Which he was at all these.
But then basically ignore the stats IE assists/goals creating chances/key passes. To suit your own argument. When these stats show he was a bang average midfielder.
He’s gone, let’s move on, good money fir a 30yr old and not the big loss, some people seem to think.
