January Transfer Window 2026

Actually cannot believe I'm seeing people turning their noses up at Ivan Toney. Some of you need your heads thoroughly examined.

There genuinely aren't many better centre forwards than him out there, never mind ones we could sign. Proven consistent goalscorer at this level and still only 29. What more do people want????
There's two ways of looking at this

1) Would he improve Everton? Of course he would, he would stroll effortlessly into our starting XI
2) Is it worth the money? If we are talking a 6 month loan, fair enough. If we are talking a transfer fee and huge wages (he currently earns about £400k per week) and a few years contract for a 29 year old striker who's spent the last 18 months in Saudi Arabia, then that would require some serious thought because it smacks of the sort of signing that got us in trouble.

No no no on Richarlison. Never a massive fan when he was here. He is not top class for a reason. He is too slow! Can finish when in the box but is now often injured. Best days have come and gone.
The problem with Everton is we continually have crap windows - and these colour our thinking. So, people can now rightly argue "But Richarlison is better than we have!"

Well, of course he is when we likely wasted money on Barry.

So, what do Everton do? We re-sign Richarlison because he is an "upgrade" - and then we find ourselves back here again this time next year wondering why he hasn't really worked out and pondering a move for Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

The other problem we have is that we are constantly looking backwards. Maybe other clubs also do this, I don't know, I don't pay enough attention, but we constantly look to former players and managers to solve our problems despite having been rubbish (relatively) for thirty years or more. There is nobody left in the game who has actually tasted any real success for Everton Football Club but still we hanker after players and coaches who were part of that failure. For what it's worth, I'd have Richarlison on loan in January because we are so short of forward quality. We know he can hit the ground running and we also know he'll run himself into the ground for this club because he has done it before. I wouldn't have him back on a permanent because of the cost (wages and fee), because of his age and because of his injury record. I also think that, as a club, we need a genuinely fresh start and so former players and coaches should not be on our wishlists.
