Being the eternal pessimist I am, if we sign this geezer I think the Williams comparisons will look very prescient in a couple of years.

His legs will go. It might be tomorrow, or next season or in year three but he's getting 4 or 5 years and at some point in that deal we'll have a player who can no longer run at the level a PL player needs to.

If you can't name another CB and tarkowski is obviously an upgrade on our current CBs, why would you not have him? If you can't name another CB that is a realistic option, then that would indicate that Tarkowski is the best realistic option for us.

Having watched Keane and Holgate for the last few years, I fail to see how he isn't an upgrade.

Absolutely, but for me it’s as much psychological as anything else.

Williams and Tarkowski were both perceived as these kind of lionhearted warriors at the heart of the defence of plucky underdogs. People think they’ll bring that same level of intensity and application to us, but the truth is once they feel any kind of expectation at all they’ll crumble.

If Tarkowski plays well: just think, he’s doing that for BURNLEY! If he plays crap: guys, he can’t win every game by himself, he plays for BURNLEY!! Win-win.

Every fibre of my being - and I’ll balance this out by once again admitting I thought Klaasen would be a great signing - tells me this signing would be a big mistake.

For me not the right mix.

Don’t rate Godfrey, Holegate in their early to mid 20’s or Branthwaite then mate.

I disagree, both have hit high ceiling in their Everton careers to be proven of more than worth, consistency is a different matter.

Watched lots of them have you? Have lots of experience of signing their former CBs? Or are you basing that view entirely on Keane?

He's been at Burnley for like 8 years. Yes I've seen him play a time or two.

He has also spent his time at lower leagues, where it's arguably a tougher, more physical game.

I actually think the game is getting older. We’re seeing those who are coming to the end of their careers extending them, prob due to being the first generation to benefit from modern S&C. Benzama in line for the BOD for example. The game is as she ever was a Chara, bar Dias and Gabriel the top performing centre backs were all over 28 last season.
