Well we do know what Townsend said and that's that James has been training well.
We do know what players have said in the past that they all like James. We do know that we see him in the videos (hard to fully judge I know) training just like the rest of them do.
Yet as you say, people prefer to go with this sudden idea that he's a complete tosser who goes around slagging Everton off.
The last thing he said in public was that he was ready to play if the manager wanted him to play.
I suspect if he didn't have Twitch, which doesn't bother me in the slightest, no one would suggest any of those things.
Oh I think they would mate. People love to fill the void and make sweeping assumptions, and as long as the team are winning games, the club can do no wrong and it has to be all on the player.
At the same time, I fully concede some people think it's all on the club - and it's definitely not, it's a two-way thing.
Training?
Fear it might be the whole "I don't even know who Everton play this weekend LOL" stuff that makes people think that, not that he's being victimised.
I also feel like "if the manager wants me to play" is such a PR copout to shift it over to Rafael, who is already such a polarising figure for us.

Given he has to perform domestically this season to get himself back into the National team, or even to get himself a contract with a top flight club, he could very easily have taken the easy option

I've told you clearly why he didn't get picked for the first four games of Everton's season. He was in isolation (like four other players, one of whom is clearly seen as our key defender in Godfrey), and the other one v Brighton him and the club agreed not to be involved while a move was on the cards. Why he didn't get picked for yesterday's squad is down to Benitez. He'll hide behind match fitness but has undermined his own point. Which leads me to believe it's just Benitez being stubborn. Because I could have outdone Rondon last night and I was pumped full of 2 lots of painkillers and coming down off anesthetic.
He didn't get picked for Colombia's Copa squad because they didn't think they could rely on him to get back from his calf injury which kept him out for the run-in. Even though Everton said he would be able to, he had a squad to use and he wanted to rely on all of them.
He hasn't played other than friendlies since then, so why would he then get picked for Colombia?
