James doesn’t fit the rest of the squad. He’s not good enough to force a formation change and we’re not good enough for us to make a formation change to accommodate him. Not with Keane and Holgate in the back and Coleman to the right. It would mean Richy and Gray tracking back.

Ultimately we didn't sign him thinking he'd play 40 games.
Unfortunately, our manager and DoF did set up the entire system around him so when he wasn't there (for half the games), we were next to useless and resorted to backs to the wall and never got out of that. Worked against decent teams but against tosh it was like we'd forgot how to form atttacks.
I suppose that's the issue. We can't have just one way of playing.
But, I know we can't afford £200k weekly wages for a reserve/different option.
However, the reason we can't afford that is on the club for spending so much on tosh in the last 5 years.
The formation that suits James happens to be the one that suits our other best two attackers.
Formations count less than structure and ways of playing though and because of James' fitness, we can't build the system around him.
So fine, by all means get rid, but it doesn't make it not a shame. If Delph and Gomes (who did okay today) and Tosun weren't here leaking £300k+ weekly wages, if Brands had done his job and shifted players we've needed to shift for years (not just let them run their deals down), then we'd be able to afford him.

Last year’s 4-3-3? With Holgate providing deep cover at RB and Allan constantly finding himself out of position covering right midfield, leaving gaping holes open in the center of the pitch? No thank you. We’re not good enough for that and don’t maintain enough possession for that to work against the bigger clubs.
For us, he’s a natural 10 in a 4-2-3-1 playing under DCL. And that means you lose Richy up the field because he doesn’t track at all.
James has the left foot of a god. He could play the game with a cast on his right leg. And he pretty much tried that last season.
That wasn't what happened. We only played 4-3-3 at the start of the season when we won 7 in a row. We stopped playing it after the Southampton (A) game because it relied on Richarlison and Coleman to work and both were injured/suspended.
The 4-3-3 had Allan central as the 6 and Doucoure on the right. I don't think that was the right way to use them but that's why I said we'd need another midfielder in and another, athletic right-back.
But we didn't play 4-3-3 much, if at all, after about November last season.
Nope, James doesn't have to play central for us. In fact, his best games for us all came when he was playing on the right. He isn't quick enough to play central in this league.
But for him to play right, then we'd need an athletic right-back and another midfielder. So I don't have an issue with us shifting him, but the issue I do have is we've needed those players for years anyway regardless of James.
