Is the attack worse than last season?

Probably a massive oversimplification, but we brought in great technical players like Grealish and KDH and expected them to drag the team up to their level. Instead we’ve brought them down to ours, and we’re back to slow, ponderous, predictable attacks that break down after we’ve had 7 completely benign touches in the box.

Yes, because we have better players so they should produce more. There are not many managers in the world who would pick these players:

Calvert Lewin Beto Chermiti Doucoure Harrison Lindstrom McNeil Ndiaye

Over these players

Grealish Ndiaye Dibling KDH Barry Beto Alcaraz McNeil

There’s been a step up in player quality but it’s not reflected on the pitch

There is also the notion that now Moyes has been here a while they have worked out his tactics, and how easy it is to play against the strikers we have who need about 40 mins to trap the ball.. instead of giving them space etc... We need to bin off Beto, if we can find a buyer, and invest in someone who know's how to play as a striker, as opposed to learning as you go along..
I'm not sure we would get him mid season but I like the look of this guy, played in 9 games so far, started 8 and scored 8 goals and still 23 years old

well hopefully Moyes pulls somethign out the bag January... as this is a real problem. As others have highlighted, it's just going to put more pressure on the defence..

I take it we are talking half a season as nothing could have been as bad as Dyche in the first part.
If you're into stats and i know not everyone is.
We're bang in the middle of the table for creating chances.
We're 19th in the table for shots on target.
Its not rocket science is it.

it absolutely isnt. the attack is much improved, as is our ability to play on the front foot, and to keep hold of the ball

but there is higher expectations on this team with signings of Grealish and KDH, and the change in style of play, and Moyes is not necessarily getting the best out of them , whereas last year with Harrison, Lindstrom, Doucoure he was squeezing every last drop out of them

we have short memories, Villa was probably the best attacking football we have played since 18/19, certainly since Ancelotti, we just have a really poor striker, and also they had a Golden Glove winner in net who made a handful of top class saves

the final point is that with a competent striker we beat Villa, West Ham and Spurs, sit 3rd in the table, and this forum is discussing whether we can win the league

in summary, anyone saying it is worse this year has short memories and you deserve to live in a perpetual dycheballian hellscape for eternity watching jack harrison fall over the ball and pickford smacking it long at every opportunity

Beto is crap.

But the one thing he is half okay at, is running on to the ball behind. Thats where he scored his Udinese goals, its how hes scored half his goals here...

So why do we persist on hoofing it to him, and excepting him to bring it down and set people up?

Thats on Moyes for being one dimensional. I struggle to see what striker could come in and get double figures with whar we ask our No. 9 to do.

It’s all a bit disjointed really and there are plenty of reasons for that. The pieces should be better than they have so that’s manager issue.

The slowness comes from fears of the breakaway. It’s something we will have to suffer through until Branthwaite comes back as our defensive coverage lacks true pace.

Like anything else, it’s more complicated than it appears. We are a bit stretched and unable to achieve overloads in good positions down to a variety of factors.

But, to me, the fact our defensive line needs to adopt a deeper starting position has massive knock on implications for the whole side in both attack and defence.

People want simplistic and easy answers and, at this level, they don’t really apply.

….’attack’ is an accumulative of threat from all areas of the team in the top third.

Our attacking threat has significantly increased with the introduction of Grealish playing on the opposite flank to Ndiaye but we continue to be impotent in central attack.

So, I believe we carry greater threat but that isn’t translating to goals.

this is why as good as Keane has been he needs to come out the side imo. OBrien is a lot quicker and could allow us to play higher up the field.

Tarkowski is out of form, and far from rapid, but he's still a lot quicker and more agile than Keane. He's also more aggressive and more likely to defend on the front foot, which is why he works well with Branthwaite

Perhaps, let’s see what Moyes does. The best thing about last season was we had a pretty unique defensive style but we are much more conventional at the moment and it kind of highlights the drawbacks of O’Brien at right back while taking away a lot of the positives.

That said, if he isn’t as good in the centre as Keane maybe we should just drop him entirely and put Garner at right back. That way we can have Merlin pushed up and drop KDH into his more natural position.

At least Keane and Tarkowski know each other well and have a good understanding.
