Whats the difference between a true dm and Darron Gibson, Maroanne Fellaini, Phil Neville and Thomas Hitzlesperger then when they play as the deepest sitting midfielder in front of the defence?

A true DM is a Makalelelele or a pre-injury Essien, somebody who just sits and mops up play.

We play with 2 CMs, granted 1 of them is tasked to be the mop, but we ideally want them to be able to play football.

I think Moist and most of football has moved away from the 1 player sitting in the DM role, most teams play with 2 CMs, 1 of which sits deep and 1 of which is tasked to be the creative force.

As it stands, we have Neville doing the mopping and Osman doing the creative thingy.

Ideally Gibson would play instead of Neville, but I wouldnt consider him a DM, more a deep lying playmaker, which leaves is with Osman, who is neither of these roles, so I think Moist will look towards a creative ball playing player, rather than a ball winning player.

Pre-window closing he actually went for both types, Nzonzi I would consider a DM and Ofoe, from what ive seen would consider him an AM.

Im aware im not making much sense, so hopefully you can understand what im trying to say.

the Everton formation might not be suitable for a defensive midfielder but that is what i would buy - i beleive that is our soft underbelly - we get hurt far too easily far too early far too often than is good for the confidence of any team

Nah mate it makes sense. A creative CM akin to an Arteta or Moutinho is what we need. Someone who can get the ball from Gibson and dictate the play; with the movement of Fellaini, Pienaar, Jelavic and Mirallas in front of him as well, then it should work.

Just need the right player - Moyes obviously wanted to try Ofoe on deadline day, but I think somebody like Holtby, Benega, Paulinho (from Corinthians, I think) or Beñat (who is having a brilliant season so far for Betis - pretty much Arteta Mk.2) would be better. All young, pretty pacey and very good on the ball. Would take any of them come January

This season its been more about getting hit on the break, as weve been exerting a lot of pressure. As weve become more adventurous, it leaves space at the back and we have suffered for it, notably against Newcastle. I also dont think our defence has been particularly cohesive. Jags has been very good at stopping leaks that shouldnt be happening in a well organised defence.

My main worry at the moment is Gibson, im not sure we can rely on him, fitness wise.

Hopefully its just a troublesome injury and whens hes fit, he will stay fit, but I have a concern.

I think when we have Gibson back, it covers us in that area. Nev just doesn't have the legs to cover us when we break: ideally, Gibson receives the ball and starts the attack, letting the 'flair' players do their thing, and therefore been there to cover if we cock up.

Yeh mate, that's a worry. Hopefully he'll be fine. I don't think he'll have particularly lost any form, but his fitness will be an issue, not just injury wise but also how long he can play during a game. He hasn't played much this season (90 mins against Utd, 70 vs. Villa and 20 vs. West Brom, so pretty much 2 games).

What is with the stupid hate parade on Vellios, He's an alight player still young and still learnng, Get a grip.
I agree people seem to going overboard a bit on this one. Its like the bad doctor, theyve lost all their patients. hehehe

I agree with you about that and hopefully he does come back and plug the gap. I think he obviously distributes the ball better so it speeds up the attack and also provides an "out ball" in the middle of the pitch for our wingers and fullbacks, meaning we can switch play as well. Neville has done this, but isnt as effective.

Infact, reading it back, im not even sure what im trying to say.

I think I need a sleep.

I knew what you we're trying to say and its exactly what i thought you'd say.

Of course different players play that role differently, and over the years we're more often or not had a more defensive minded player(Carsley, Neville) sitting as a more creative one done his thing. Of course now with Gibson or Fellaini playing there they've performed that role but added so much more from their creative play which is fine.

But i'm saying that we won't sign a defensive minded midfielder to play in that role just in front of the defence, be it a more destroyer type or a more creative type but one who's primary role is to protect the defence and break up play.

So in other words he'll spend whatever money we have elsewhere in Jan thinking that we can cope through till the Summer with Gibson, Neville, Fellaini and maybe Hitzlesperger playing that position.

Cheers mate. This is what we've missed. We haven't conceded a goal with him on the pitch so far this season (i know he hasn't played much like) but it shows that we are more solid with him. He does the simple things well, where as Nev and Osman always seem rushed on the ball, whereas Gibbo's more composed. Put Gibson alongside, just for an example, Beńat, we'd have the pretty much perfect CM partnership. Both can pass well, with the solidity of Gibson allowing the other CM to push forward and join the attack. Would be good...

I think it depends mate. Fellaini is a beast in CM, but he's looking just as good behind Jelavić. And if Osman gets injured, which he always seem to do, around Christmas, then we are short in that area. We definitely don't need a holding-player as we don't play the 'old' 4-5-1 system anymore, where a DM (e.g. Carsley) would sit behind two CM's. But we could do with a creative player to fill the void left by Arteta (basically we need another no.10), to float around alongside Gibson and pick the killer pass.
