At the time it made sense. He was not good enough for us. He was a waster who lacked the sort of sophistication we needed to go to another level.
Now I know I was wrong.
I now realise that were at a crucial crossroads and took the wrong path.
Instead of becoming "Big Sam's Merseyside Bombers" we foolishly appointed a string of duds as we spunked away even more cash on rubbish.
We could have become the most feared team in the land, striking fear into opposition managers (and pitchside season ticket holders) with our unstoppable aerial attack. And, who knows, with Sam's reputation for reinvigorating old players we could perhaps have seen Lionel Messi dancing around opposition players before pumping a 50-yard beauty onto the head of one of our famous frontline - Sebastian Haller or fan favourite, the reborn Peter Crouch.
I now accept I was totally wrong. So grab a pint of wine, order a year's supply of pork scratchings and jump into your second-hand Mercedes. Come home and save our season Big Sam!
