How much has the war in Ukraine cost us?

John from Bootle

Player Valuation: £15m
Well? Anybody know the figures?

Amidst rightful criticism of the board/owner, it's worth remembering that once again, a major conflict has hindered Everton's plans.

Whatever your opinion on the board and/or owners, it's hard to dispute, that enough cash to probably buy one or two players, was wiped from the budget when Vlad decided to send the troops in. So again, how much worse off are we? What's the 'hole' in the accounts that we did not foresee?

Are we the unluckiest club in world football? Amidst the backdrop of a new stadium build, the extra £xx million from the lost sponsor deals would have been in place for many more years, but for now, it's just a one year 'hole'..

This years accounts for 2021/2022 to be released before 31 March is expected to be around another £70 million loss.

It's touch and go if they will fail Premier League P&S three year average of £110 million

This could be why for T+1 and T+2 projections they've had to book the Gordon money to show a trend of profit or improvement. To avoid sanctions

...

I would also add it's not a one year hole. Baxendale and Kenwright have proven entirely unable to meet the revenue needs of the club.

Baxendale trumpeted a +£300,000 per year increase on Cazoo in the Stake deal as amazing performance. Its pathetic. Its barely 1/3 of her ridiculous annual salary.

I'm not sure a football club is the most important thing when discussing the invasion of a country by Russia.

Its relevant to the running of EFC

I recall people on twitter when I raised it (impact of the invasion) three weeks before the invasion, telling me it wouldn't happen etc

Too many people try and shut down discussion or shout 'stop being negative' 'negative' when we are talking about real world impacts on Everton

The "negative" tag was frequently used on twitter when people raised things people didn't necessarily want to talk about. Real world things that would have real world impacts on Everton Football Club

Kind of like how Baxendale and Kenwright writes things to fans. Not in real world

I'm not sure you can claim bad luck when you actively seek investment from countries that, let's face it, have different values. I mean, I don't see too many commentators saying "Poor old Germany. They had some really bad luck with all those Russian business contracts they signed." Now, I live in Germany, and, to be fair, the German political establishment was following "Ostpolitik" - an attempt to deepen ties with former enemies through trade - and this worked tremendously well in the 1970s and 1980s with East Germany. So, while I have some sympathy for the Germans (they did all of this for pretty sound reasons that were lauded for decades), the general attitude to them now - with hindsight - is they made their own bed. That also applies to Everton, to some extent. We knew Usmanov was involved. We knew his record.

Unlike Germany though, which has the might and expertise to shake off any economic dependency on Russia (and already has, by and large, with incredible speed), Everton's "expertise" is characterised by Bill Kenwright. While WWI and WWII brought disaster for both Germany and Everton, I feel that this war might only have the one loser this time...

The big hole would be the USM naming rights for the stadium.

That, and all the other Usmanov linked companies being sent to the naughty step has exposed our commercial team led by the unimpressive CEO for what they are, totally out of their depth.

Totally incapable of attracting respected sponsors to the club. The embarrassing climb down over gambling sponsorship for the sake of 300k (12 days of Yerry Mina) shows how desperate they are to scrounge whatever they can.

What have they done to grow overseas markets? Nothing of note.

We shouldn't have been so reliant on one massive company for most of our commercial income, but in true Everton style....the board sat back and congratulated themselves on what a top notch job they've done.

I cannot disagree with a single word of this

Shareholders at the club raised this very thing.

The response of Bill Kenwright and Denise Barrett-Baxendale was to cancel the Everton Football Club Annual General Meeting. In January 2022.

That should tell people everything.

Stake is the 8th biggest shirt sponser in the Prem. Fans keep talking about increasing revenues but thats done by winning trophies, playing in the Champions League and attracting the mass of casuals from Asia, Africa, America etc into buying your product.

Man City and PSG relied on dodgy sponsers until they became successful, newcastle will do the same with Saudi.

We tried with USM but never had success on the pitch but now Ukraine war has meant there isnt a 2nd bite of the cherry at least in the short term.

Thats why FFP at its heart is corrupt as you need success over a long period of time to generate revenues that the big 6 enjoy but thats near impossible to do (see Leicester).

8th highest taken in its own is pretty good. When you factor in the embarrassing climb down over gambling as well as the lack of credibility/trust from breaking off with our previous top bidder (widely believed to be Kayak, the travel Co) means people will be wary of entering serious negotiations in future.

They still do, irrelevant to Everton.

Down to interference and a weak board, unable/unwilling to stand up to the owner and all to happy to do their own thing.

No argument there.
