Hooligans and Ultras

Somebody help me out - what is the difference between a "football hooligan" and an "Ultra"?

This has been rattling around in my head ever since Hajduk Split came to Goodison, and some of their "Ultras" engaged in activities that I would have described as hooliganism. Is there actually any difference, or is "Ultra" just another trendy European euphemism, beloved by hipsters?

Ultra's are passionate fans who back their team vocally and visually with things like signs/flares

Hooligan's are chumps that like starting fights with other fans

Short for " Ultra Fanatical Supporters ".

Meaning they may be involved at some level in the club.

Could be involved in right / left wing groups.

The stuff Mikey says.

Plus it's also short for " Ultra bellends " too.
