HK critical of Moyes' six LC changes

I'd rather win the league cup and finish 1st or as close as we can get to it. It's not a one or the other thing in my eyes.

Resting a few players against lower league sides early in the competition means those same players are more likely to be fresh later on in the same competition and less likely to cop for an injury in the process, giving us a better chance of winning it.

My own opinion is that Moyes struggles with any kind of expectation. Our first team has been repeatedly knocked out of cup coimpetitions by lower league sides, usually at full strength, so it's a bit short sighted to blame this just on rotation.

I don't think our opinions are massively different mate it's just I saw our greatest ever side rolling over pretty much everyone in front of it and for that he'll always have my utmost respect.

I cant have a bad word said about Duncan despite the obvious, I understand where your coming from. Especially when he's given you nights I can only dream of.

I struggle to make my mind up what moyes wants .

and I'm sure you're not alone in this regard. I wonder if Moyes knows what he wants at times. As he's well past his 10th year in 'charge' he must be thinking of testing himself somewhere else and that before he goes to get some silverware for the cabinet a) to leave Everton with some sort of legacy and b) it would look good on his resume.

I'm sure he'd rather be thought of in the same light as Kendall, Catterick and Big Joe rather than associated with the likes of Lee, Walker and Bingham.

I think you've hit the nail on the head. I've always said that while Moyes cares about Everton, he also cares about his won rep. I think he struggles to decide which would enhance it more, a cup or a high league finish.

I don't think too many people are criticising Moyes for trying out some of our fringe players, just a matter of how many changes he made from the off.

I reckon a couple of the stiffs (Oviedo for Baines, and Junior in the middle) would have been ample, and IF (always a big IF with us!) we'd have been sitting pretty at half-time or on the hour, he could have looked to bring 1 or maybe 2 more on for some match-time.

Yeah exactly mate, makes me laugh the amount of people who think if we played a full strentgh side we definitely wouldn't have played gash and lost.

Dave you are the biggest WUM on here.

You have even said yourself plenty of times that we need to play youth, reserve players for game time and he does and he still gets slated.

This team should have been good enough to beat Leeds...

I've posted the thoughts of Everton's greatest ever manager on a recent defeat, how that conveys to anyone as 'a wind up' is beyond me.

As for contradicting myself: I do call for fringe players to get their chance, but not in that volume and not in what's proven to be a very tricky environment for us historically. I've always been of the opinion that we should get the job done and then blood fringe players as early in the game as possible. I also believe and have argued that as soon as we're safe enough then we should use the last 8/9 games of the season to make wholesale changes to see who really is a squad player and who is just a body masquerading as one.

Making lots of changes is all about context. Moyes got that one wrong the other night. HK is spot on implying it.

Nice smilie

How many is too many? 6 is obviously too many for you dave, how about 5? How about 4? The point is that team he put out should be good enough to beat Leeds, they didnt- you look for a scape goat and its too many changes, that team of Fellaini, Mirallis, Heitinga, Distin, Coleman, Vic, Naismith are all in and around our starting 11.

Apart from Mucha, who done nothing wrong he didn't do muich different to that.

Most have said they think Fellaini is better as a box to box player.

Plenty think Heits and Disty are our best pair, me included.

Most think Neville is gash and junior should have got a chance. Most also think three games in a week is too much for an arl man like Nev.

Hibbo is injured, who else could have played there.

Would you have rushed Jela back and dropped an in-form Vic in case the lower league side were boss?

His options weren't as bountiful as some people would have you think.

Nailed it. Wind ups need a scape goat to stir it up a bit.

If you went back in time to before the Leeds match, 99% of us would have agreed with playing a weaker side.

Retrospect is nice, but it's not the six changes that bothered me - it was the mindset of the players. Once again too many proved themselves to be surrender monkeys in cup competitions, bottling it when the pressure is on to win, and a large aspect of that is the mentality of the manager.

So, in summary, I don't blame his team selection - I blame his managerial ability.

This. It was a strong team. Six changes includes Naismith for Osman and Distin for Jagielka which is hardly kids. And Howard and Neville haven't exactly been pulling up trees for us this season.

The only real players rested were our two left hand sided players and we missed them massively. But I can sympathise with Moyes on that one. Gueye played well enough against orient to merit another chance and Oviedo needed a game to get him settled in.

It was a risk that didn't work but I don't think it wasn't a risk worth taking. Fellaini, Naismith, Heitinga et al having shockers had a lot more to do with us losing then the young players he bought in.

Howard Kendall won the league with a squad of about fourteen players.Football has changed,we have probably a squad of eighteen outfield players alone and it is one of the smallest in the premiership.
The manager has to rest players and he has to rotate his squad,it is a fact of life.
If he had played his first eleven against Leeds,he would have been slated for not giving youngsters a chance.

Regarding management I believe the following : when you win you are right, when you lose you are wrong.

Regarding the management of Howard Kendall,I have always felt that he has been harshly judged for his third period in charge at Everton.I know that he wasn't as clear headed as he was during his first spell in charge, but we shouldn't forget that the club was in an absolute shambles at that time.
Look at the players he had at that time, look at the players he was allowed to bring in,the non-transfer budget he had.I can never figure out how he managed to avoid relegation that seson.
