Henry Newton RIP

Came as a midfielder finished as a fullback as I remember, RIP and condolences to his family. 💙
I must have watched him a few times for us when I was very young but don't recall too much of him in blue. Yes, he was played at left back as we already had the Holy Trinity in midfield. He was then apparently Brian Clough's last signing before he left Derby and struggled to get in the side initially after Dave Mckay took over. But he played the full season alongside Archie Gemmill and Bruce Rioch when Derby beat us to the title in 74/75. I remember him featuring when they thrashed Real Madrid at home the next season. All in all, a decent career. R.I.P.

Henry went on to win a League Championship medal after leaving us for Derby - 74/5 when we blew it.

I remember he said he got a bit of a cold reception from the players when he arrived at Goodison - later became a good friend of HK.

In those days you didn't spend a club record fee on someone who wasn't going to play and we already had the best midfield in the country - Kendall, Ball, Harvey. For his debut the Catt dropped John Hurst, shifted HK to centre-back and put Henry into his position in midfield. We lost 4-0 to Arsenal and that idea was swiftly abandoned.

After that Henry was tried in our 'problem' position - left back, with mixed results I remember his scoring a few goals and also a spectacular own goal against Man City at home.

Henry was a fine player, a tough tackler but with a touch of class. Should have been ideal for us but Everton wasn't the best period of his career -probably the right signing at the wrong time.

He was rather an anonymous sort of player whilst with us hardly a world beater. I remember him mainly for scoring the fifth goal in a cup game which won me the Buster in our drawing office.

Going purely off memory here but i think the Holy trinity was by this time. almost finished. Bally had left and Colin was missing quite a few games through injury.
Hence Mick Buckley got his chance.
Hazy memories now from as a kid but i remember Micks debut and thought he was a dead ringer of Harvey's style of play.
I honestly thought he'd become an Everton legend.

Daft looking back now but i always thought Keith and Henry looked very old.
Pickwick looked young when he became fullback😅💙
