Heitinga (again)........

Johnny was great last season and I love the man but I still think Jagielka and Distin is our best partnership. Heitinga doesn't win enough in the air at times and he switches off which causes him to lose his marker more than the two aforementioned centre backs IMO, although his distribution is a lot better than the others'. He seems to let forwards back in and shield the ball or bring it down too much for me as well e.g. Grant Holt's goal against us at Goodison last season.

Whatever your opinion, though, it's a good problem to have. Knowing that no matter who is left out we've got a quality replacement on the bench is positive.

In the same amount of minutes played as Jagielka last season:

-We conceded 8 less goals with him on the pitch than Jags
- He gave the ball away less than half as much
- He had a higher successful pass percentage
- He had a higher successful tackle percentage

I think.

Moyes loves getting his favourites, Jagielka is one of his favourites. No matter how well HEitinga plays in a blue shirt, Moyes is always looking to get Jagielka back in the fold. It's happened for 10 years, it aint gonna change anytime soon. in 09/10, Heitinga and Distin were THE defensive partnership, we lost like 2 in the second half of the season, same happend then, HEitinga dropped, incomes Jagielka.

competition for places is good, but only if its a fair competition, at Everton it isnt, moyes has his favourites and picks them regardless of form or opposition, he will shoehorn that long ball merchant back in no matter what.

Hes not happy hes not playing, good.
Hes said hes commited to Everton and will fight for his place, good.

Much prefer that than him saying, "Not even arsed, picking up 70 large for sitting on the bench, itsch good ya?".

At the end of the day Moist prefers Jags and Distin, it sucks for Johnny, but there you go, we gotta keep him sweet tho, Distin really isnt getting any younger and I suppose the thinking is play him while we can, at least it justifys the fee we paid, which lets be honest, has been justified 10 fold by his performances.

I really thought he was a cow on roller skates when he first came, but hes showed me hey!

So, I dunno, I really dont, IMO we have 3 utterly, utterly superb CBs and its tough for me to sperate them.

I feel for Johnny, I do.

The logic for me is that regardless of Distin playing or not, we're still going to be paying his wage AND Heitinga's until the summer at least (no way i could see Moyes selling Heitinga in January if he would at all). If we don't play Distin then it's not as if he's going to flip out and feel like his career is going down the pan, he's in the twilight period anyway.

But with Heitinga, he's getting £55k a week, and if he's not being played then he's more likely to want away. I'd much rather keep the player sweet who could be very important for us going forward than the one whose best days are long gone.

Getting a centre half like Heitinga for the fee we paid was fantastic, and i think Moyes would struggle to find another for the transfer fee he would command (Five million or less ?).

Let's be honest here.

We have three top drawer CB's.

Only two can play at once. The good news is that we have cover in the position.

Gone away with the dutch squad, and the minute he's off the plane, he's publicly questioning Moyes' decision for leaving him out at the start of this season. I've lost count of the times he's done this, or talked up a potential move away from the club whenever he's been made to look like a squad player, rather than the indispensible talent he seems to think he is. He'll have a year left on his contract at the end of the season, and i for one, wouldn't consider renewing it.
In short, get rid!

You're right, he does have previous for going away and being a rent-a-quote and having a moan. It is normally followed up very quickly with claims he was misquoted or quoted out of context. Previous times though it was when he was agitating for moves (or it seemed that way anyway). This time it is genuine frustration at not being in the starting XI, which is a good thing - shows he has desire rather than being content to just collect his wages for nothing.

It is a long season. He'll get his chance sooner or later. He'll then have to put up or shut up with his performances. Letting him walk for under market value is really not the solution here.

If he goes please do not replaced him with overpriced crap. Of course, Heitinga should be 1st choice CB.

Both goals came from people switching off, Hibbo/Distin for the first and Fellaini for the 2nd. Can't say I agree at all with it happening more regularly with Heitinga on the pitch, but as you say, he does get bullied off the ball by forwards at times which I think is a problem vs teams employing these types of players. Otherwise I'd have him in the team 9/10 week in week out because he gives us a better alternative bringing the ball up the field. Composure.

Heitinga should always play ffs. I love Jags and Distin but Heitinga's better than at least Distin in my opinion.

Koff MoyLeZ.

Let's attempt to summarise the potential reasons for Heitinga starting as 3d choice:-
1. he was late back from the Euros so did not take full part in pe-season training or the limited pre season games
2. he had a poor Euro's - form he may have continued in training
3. there was significant and consistent speculation about several inquiries for him from Turkey, Italy....
4. he is not in the small group of DM favourites (Osman, Neville, Baines, Jagielka etc.)
5. Jags and Johnny partnership leaves us exposed sometimes for height at the back especially if Fellaini is not in a defensive midfield position

Overall as much as JH may not like it and I like others actually believe his stroppy attitude when he is playing well and his distribution exceeds that of Jags and Distin, DM would probably find too much negative about him currently to start him from Day 1 of the season. Let's hope he cokes back to his end of 2011 season self sooner rather than later.
