The impressive ones are if someone's saying they've seen a young lad playing in the League of Ireland or the Scottish 3rd division or the Swedish league or whatever and they're going to be quality. Saying that somebody who's already playing at the top level and would cost big money is worth signing is easy!
True - but Gyorkes has since gone for ridiculous money whereas Cov were selling for around £20m I thinks - and Wharton will go on to be a £35-40m player.
Van Dyke is a good example. When at Celtic he was clearly top class and there were a few saying we should get him. Went to Saints for £11m and ended up at the pit for £75m.

There are a couple of posters who name about thirty players a window, most of whom we haven't ever been linked with, who like to self-vault years later when one of them turns out to be good. At least one of those posters also likes to give other people grief when they propose someone saying either "you've never seen that player play, I have and they are rubbish" or "why are you talking about player X, we're not even linked with them" or words to those effect.

TL: DR - No, we don't have anyone who is good at spotting players.

Is one of those posters known as el Presidente in the bars of downtown Bangkok by any chance ?

Yeah even then though, they’re players who are going to clubs at our sort of level so it’s not exactly amazing insight to say they might also be worth us having a look at. I’d imagine most people who advocated signing them at that point weren’t really saying we should get them because they’ll be worth 5 times as much in a couple of years, they were just saying they were good. If people called for us to sign van dijk from Groningen and gyokeres when he was out on loan at Swansea that’s showing a decent eye, just advocating us pursuing an existing link anyone can do.

Every club has fans using sites like ours who recommend players during transfer windows as potential targets for us.
How good are we at spotting potential though?

Who have been the players mentioned where we could have seen them blossom - and even sold at huge profits - or those that we managed to avoid and turned out to be dogs?

Recent mentions of relatively unknown players - available at reasonable fees - include Gyorkes and Wharton. Maybe we would have had no chance of getting them from Cov and Blackburn - but we definitely missed the boat. Obviously our financial woes have restricted us - but it's really heartening to see us buy people like Dibling and Rohl - both with massive potential.

We've seen some awful shouts to buy players - who have turned out to be complete wastes of money. A few of which we ended up buying unfortunately.

Wonder if the academy fella who ignored Haaland when he visited us is still employed?
Isn't that one an urban myth? I read somewhere that Haaland trained with several teams, then he made his choice along with his Dad's advice. We were never in with a real shout. But there were rumours that Gordon Lee turned his nose up at Gullit.
And Banega didn't come because Moyes was quoted in the media as saying he was only interested at looking at him on loan rather than seeing him as a starter.

I said we should buy Chris Woods back in 2020. Obviously not world class, but you wonder how many of those missed chances DCL had that he may have scored we'll never know.

Also remember someone wanting Szbozslai in 2021 before he went to RBL from RBS for €20m. How much did the RS buy him for a few years later?
Didnt chris woods retire in the early 00"s!?

?????????????

I brought the world Joao Moutinho and Mo Besic.
Ha ha. Yes, a player we didn't sign (and who was already well know and very good before you changed your name to jinx any potential signing) and a lad who had one good game against Messi and was then rubbish forevermore. I stand by my initial analysis of GoTs scouting prowess!

I think he came to look as a schoolboy - as he prolly did to a few other clubs - but realisically I wouldn't have expected him to have been scouted or even willing to join us. I remember Sigurdson was also said to have visited us as a schoolboy.
It;s impossible to know who'll make it at that age though - which I guess is the point of the thread.
It's about making an informed judgement of someone's potential - after we've seen them play - and what value they could bring to us if recruited - and where they ended up after being mentioned.
