GOT Player of the Season 2017/18

The season is over, the players have largely gone on holiday – Jordan Pickford and Idrissa Gana Gueye being the exceptions as they’re both heading off to Russia for the World Cup to represent England and Senegal respectively – the club has dismissed an unpopular manager and looks to appoint a new one. We’ve a new and proven Director of Football in Marcel Brands, and there’s been a re-shuffle in the boardroom and all that happened inside four days of the season ending… phew.

But let’s take this opportunity to look back across the season through the Man of the Match voting and the Player of the Month results, and may we take this opportunity to once again thank each and everyone who cast their votes throughout the season as without your votes, none of what’s gone before and follows now would be possible – thank you.

All tolled, the Grand Old Team membership voted across a total of 51 games for a total of 38 players who donned the Royal Blue. And from those 51 games and 38 players used, not surprisingly Jordan Pickford recorded the most minutes played with Michael Keane, Idrissa Gana Gueye and Wayne Rooney recording the top three most minutes played from the outfield players.

In the highs and lows of game voting, the games that drew the lowest and highest numbers of votes cast ironically, both resulted in 1-1 draws. The lowest being in the wake of the April visit to Swansea whereas the highest single game vote came after the early season visit to the eventual champions, Manchester City.

In the highs and lows of individual MotM winners, both matches were against Manchester City.

Tom Davies was the lowest total MotM vote winner following the 1-3 home loss in March while Dominic Calvert-Lewin polled the highest MotM vote for his performance and assist in the 1-1 draw at the Etihad Stadium back in August.

If we turn our attention to the votes cast across the four competitions Everton competed in this season, we would see Player of the Competition awarded to…

F.A.Cup – Phil Jagielka
Carabao Cup – Dominic Calvert-Lewin
Europa League – Nikola Vlasic… some achievement given he played against us in two games before completing his transfer from Hajduk Split.
Premier League – Oumar Niasse… again, some achievement given he only played a part in 22 of the 38 games, with only four complete games.

If we look at the Man of the Match winners, Jordan Pickford romped home with ten awards, Oumar Niasse with five and four players with four awards each namely Idrissa Gana Gueye, Tom Davies, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Beni Baningime. Gylfi Sigurdsson landed three; Wayne Rooney, Nikola Vlasic, Mason Holgate, Jonjoe Kenny and Seamus Coleman all landed two with individual game awards to Maarten Stekelenburg, Ademola Lookman, Phil Jagielka, Theo Walcott, Leighton Baines, Cenk Tosun and Morgan Schneiderlin.

Despite the disappointing season that the club endured, the numbers of Man of the Match awards won by so many of our younger players is testament to their efforts and suggests a bright future for the club with so many players coming through the ranks to catch the eye.

In a notable quirk of the voting, the two Man of the Match awards won by Wayne Rooney understandably came for his goalscoring, match-winning return against Stoke on the opening day of the season and his memorable hat-trick including an own half strike to complete the treble against and trouncing of West Ham… both of his polls recording identical numbers of votes cast.

In terms of the Player of the Month awards and refreshing memories, they were won by…
August – Dominic Calvert-Lewin
September, November and May – Oumar Niasse
October and April – Jordan Pickford
December – Jonjoe Kenny
January and February – Theo Walcott
March – Cenk Tosun

Now we come to final accolade, the Grand Old Team Player of the Season for 2017/18 and in a slight change from the Player of the Month awards, let’s recognise the top five players that amassed 43.5% of the total votes cast.

In fifth place with 6.05% is our midfield dynamo – Idrissa Gana Gueye
In fourth place with 8.22% is our young striker – Dominic Calvert-Lewin
In third place with 8.36% is the prodigal son returned and leading scorer – Wayne Rooney
In a magnificent second place and runner up with 10.25% of the vote with the never-say-die, chase down a lost cause attitude, our enigmatic second top scorer – Oumar Niasse

Meaning, the leading vote winner with 10.62% of the total votes cast, it gives us great pleasure to announce that you voted the Grand Old Team Player of the Season for 2017/18...

Jordan Pickford.

If we had Pickford instead of Howard in the good old day's. There'd be more top four finishes than just 05.

We've been calling for a decent goalkeeper to be signed for the last 3/4 years and his impact this year shows exactly why we've been calling for a signing in that position. The board must be inept to be blind to something so fundamental!

I fully expect our next acquisition at left back to win the GOT Player of the Season 2020/21 in his debut season.
