Good documentaries

I was bored so I watched "Tony Robbins: I am not your Guru" on netflix. Tony Robbins, whose TV commercials I've seen on TV for a long long time, is a self-help guy, and usually his TV commercials are basically half-hour long infomercials about how his "self-help package" can "transform your life" ...of course, if you pay 400$ for it.

I had just written him off as another scam.

This movie was pretty amazing though. I actually gained a new respect for him. He seems quite genuine, yet simultaneously makes no apologies for the cost of his programs. He is honest about everything: both trying to help you and the fact that it is gonna cost lots of money for him to do so.

This documentary follows one of his week-long seminars that people sign up for, and pay an astounding 5000$ to attend. It is an amazing film and the following thoughts replayed through my head as I watched it:

--what a scam
--wow, people are messed up
--why I'm a such a cynical [Poor language removed], he's trying to help people
--no, it's a scam
--wow, she is VERY messed up, hope she gets the help she needs
--Tony Robbins is pretty honest and awesome
--or not, perhaps this is just overpriced woo and he prays on the weak
--or not, perhaps he's genuine
--Whoa, now THAT person is really in trouble
--why am I such a cynical person who judges Tony Robbins for trying to help others: what have I done to help others?
--5000$ for a week, holy cow, that's a lot of clams, what a waste
--Okay, maybe he's genuine
--What a hokey load of woo.
--But it seems to work for some people so more power to them (and Tony)

Repeat.

What an entertaining film.
I think you need some help mate.

Stuck with it but there was a massive cringe factor with this. I just think he's a brilliant Psychologist and there's a lot of vulnerable people willing to pay him a lot of money and hopefully he helps them. Don't know about you but thought it was suspicious that the main characters who's stories were featured all looked quite photogenic and appeared like amateur actresses?

Concerning Violence - a decent doc about the legitimate use of violence to remove colonial power by natives around the globe.

That Amanda knox one - bored me.

No, I hear ya. I definitely was cringing, but also fascinated, and also--at times--sympathetic, and also skeptical. And also, as you note, there seemed to be a fair amount of editing as to which (messed up) individuals actually told their story in the film (versus those we didn't see).

He (Tony Robbins) is quite good (I've not paid to see him but have done his tape programmes and read some of his books). I'd say he is genuine and talented but at the same time trying to make money and that programme sounds a bit overpriced.

You can get a lot out of his books though (at a much lower cost)
