Gerrard and Lampard have played all over, so not the best examples.

Surely there is a difference between an AM and a DM. I doubt anyone would want to see Phil Neville closer to goal. This is by design and of course there is a difference between the two positions. Especially if we're talking about a diamond midfield in a 4-4-2 or the AM role in a 4-5-1. These players have different attributes and take up different positions on the pitch.

Saying they are considered "attacking midfielders" because of their syle of play is fundamentally wrong. They take up different positions on the pitch.

In the case of having a second striker they take up different positions on the pitch.

Phil Neville is a central midfielder who is more defensive in his play, whereas Lampard is a central midfielder who is more attacking in his play, but both are central midfielders.

Fellaini plays the second striker role, and it is fundamentally different to the central midfield role, whether they are inclined to be more attacking or defensive in their central midfield play.

Yeah, let's just ignore his past two seasons shall we. Saying we fell apart because Fellaini moved from behind the striker is absurd, he was destroying everybody in midfield for a good year and a half before Moyes started playing him behind the striker.

He was destroying everyone in midfield for a year and a half, that's why Everton had to knock back all those bids that were being made when his contract was running out.

Just how many bids did we turn down again? It must have been at least 5.

Not everyone plays a 4-4-2 with two flat CMs, stop trying to label these players as such. In fact, practically no one plays this way anymore, and those that do are accused of taking football back to the stone ages.

shows how far gibson has come on with people arguing who is the better midfielder. who would have believed it!

Its not even a discussion tho, I was just popcorning really.

Fellaini is by far the best midfielder in the Everton squad, anybody who says different is injecting glue whilst snorting salt.

The CM position has never been a 'flat' one, as you describe it. A truly proficient central midfielder (like Darron Gibson, or Steven Gerrard) is able to master both parts of attacking and defensive CENTRAL MIDFIELD play.

It just so happens that some central midfielders are more proficient in attacking or defensive midfield play, and they end up being labelled as an 'attacking midfielder', like Gerrard does (despite him mastering both at his peak).

My point is that Neville remains a central midfielder, albeit a defensive central midfielder. And that Osman remains a central midfielder, even if he is prone to attacking football whilst he maintains the central midfield position.

To be fair the only non-boss midfielders we have are Neville, Gueye and Coleman so I don't really care. Gibson is brilliant for us, though.

He's that good that he doesn't even play in midfield, and when he does, our team looks far weaker for it.

i agree with that 100%, fellini is on a different level. my point was when we signed gibson who would have thought he would have turned out aswell as he has...

Your clearly overlooking the previous 4 Years in which he played in midfield, its an easy mistake to make, I mean its 4 years, its only around about 130 games or so, I can see why you would totally overlook it.
