Need a solid, well-built family car with plenty of space that will last around 3 - 4 years.

I've narrowed it down to:

Citroen Grand C4 Picasso 1.6 VTR+ HDi
Skoda Octavia 1.4 TSI+
Vauxhall Insignia 1.8 VVT SRi
VW Passat 2.0 TDi Sport
VW Passat 1.9 TDi Estate
VW Touran 1.6 FSI

Any comments?

All of them are good except the Citroen.

Depends however - buying new or getting second hand? If new - doesn't really matter which one, I'd go for the Vauxhall or Passat, just as they're slightly better overall.

Citroen's are, for the most part, a wild card - I know personally several people with random piston failures/engine breakdowns that cost a lot to fix.

Can't really go wrong with German.*

*I say, having an American car.
