Chelsea signed Ziyech before the pandemic hit, and not only that, Chelsea had money burning their wallet for the entirety of their transfer ban.

If it was me I'd be looking at the manager + the players + the package on offer.

Arsenal have Pepe + Martinelli who he may be mates with and also Arteta who is very highly rated.

For me though Ancelotti who has managed some of the worlds greatest centre backs and Richarlison, Brazils new star would be more of a pull.

We dont know the financial packages on offer though, whats been promised and whats been said.

Arsenal have Luiz , Willian and Martinelli - Brazilian players. Edu - Brazilian DoF , London , Europa League , Great stadium, recent record of winning a trophyplus Arteta a bright young manager.
Everton has Richarlison and Bernard together with Ancelotti.

If I was a decent young player I think I know where I'd go.

Regardless of any apparent bid in February or March, we couldn't sign him till now/August anyway when the window opened. Other teams have joined the race. We have been on both sides of this in the past, getting players who were on the verge of joining someone else and missing out when other teams came knocking. It's the way of the world, and until its signed, nothing is final. Unless you want Brands to kidnap him, lock up somewhere for 6 months and make sure noone gets the opportunity, i don't see what else you think he could've done.

That's actually really not true. The transfer window never closes. The registration window is what all this is.

Obviously, but we didn't (covered in the 'not sure why' section of my original post). So now we are where we are.

Clearly the more negative and unstable posters in the thread are reacting to every single Twitter post and report as if it is fact rather than supposition.

Evidence suggests we have bid, it's been accepted along with other clubs bids and it's down to the club to offer more attractive terms than those of other clubs.

I'm not exactly sure what else we can realistically do that we haven't.

I think had COVID not hit, we would have. I cant blame the club not wanting to commit to £25m outlay with so much uncertainty around the world. It may be that we can use that money for a midfielder and get a cheaper defender as a result. Who knows.

You can set it all up, you can take someone's word, you can go as far as believing its done. As far as I am aware, you can't sign for another team until all 3 parties plus the independent bodies, ie, PŁ have agreed and signed off on it. An agreement is 1 thing, a completed transfer is another.

Look at David Silva signing for Sociedad instead of Lazio.

If the rumours of us still being in for Gabriel are true and the Arsenal signing stories are jumping the gun then he'd be ideal. If we dont get him then it would be hard for us to find a similar profile player as theyre either too expensive or right footed.

If we did get Gabriel i imagine we would be selling one of Holgate/Mina/Keane as theyre all right sided. Interesting if we do try and sell one, ideally Keane.

We could have signed him just not register him. He would have moved 1st day of window opening.

If we would have signed and sealed off a move for a Brazil u23 centre back who appears to be the 2nd best in france then i doubt anyone would be complaining.

Not how I believe it works mate. There’s legally binding contracts signed, there’s no re-negging.

United did it with PSV when they signed Depay.

Do you genuinely believe it’s more important that we sign Gabriel instead of proceed with a new stadium on the Liverpool waterfront.

Im not saying ones more important than the other.

The reality is in the midst of economic uncertainty if the club were that concerned over finances then they dont risk plunging into the abyss plowing ahead with a £500 million stadium plan.

If you was in the process of buying an expensive house that was going to be a hefty mortgage and you were told you were facing redundancy in the coming weeks - would you really plough ahead with the purchase?

I find the excuse of we pulled out of a deal over financial uncertainty to be rubbish.

Brands tried to renegotiate to save a few quid (down to the pandemic yes) and it backfired - it wasnt some noble or essential act to save the club from financial trouble.

If Marcel Brands was called Mark Smith you all would have chased him out months ago.

Same way if Marco Silva had been called Martin Sampson he would have been fired out of a cannon alot quicker than he was.
