Former Everton striker Francis Jeffers, meanwhile, is back at Finch Farm...Jeffers, who played for an Everton XI in Jamie Carragher’s testimonial at Anfield on Saturday, has been told by David Moyes he can train with the Blues while he is in between clubs.
Jeffers, 29, was released by Sheffield Wednesday at the end of last season.
Should Beckford be looking over his shoulder?
A bit harsh on Beckford, he hasn't been that bad.
I think it'd be kinda cool if we signed him again. Maybe playing for us would sort him out. Obv he wouldnt be a first teamer, but maybe he could get some of his form back. He's a free player, doubt he'd cost much in wages, would probably be happy playing in the reserves. Why not?
*runs and hides from obvious onslaught*
I've seen nothing to suggest he's awful or completely out of his depth, that's not to say he'll be a regular goalscorer, but he's got enough about him to be a nuisence at this level. We paid 8.9 million for a very similar player in Andy Johnson.
The problem for Beckford is the service and the fact that he's being asked to play upfront on his own. There's much more responsibility on the striker and he's going to have to adapt to that. He certainly hasn't shied away from it, he dropped deep quite a few times to try and influence the play.
We have some very intelligent footballers but everything is pass, move and to feet, we play infront of teams, and Beckford is obviously a player who likes to attack space and run in behind opposition defences. Arteta plays a bit too deep to slip him through and Pienaar, who's capable of that reverse through ball from a left-central position, isn't at his best yet.
He needs a creator in the mould of Thomas Gravesen or a Manuel Fernandes really.
