Fouls Today

McBain

Player Valuation: £80m
I have played football since forever, watched it just as long so you get a good handle on stuff, doing it for that long.

I’m getting more and more confused as to what constitutes fouls in the game today. Why some are given and some aren’t. There has always been a grey area or two, and I don’t obviously mean clear fouls.

I see today any hand touching any attacker in the box and they go down being given as pens, bit then one defender wrestling someone to the ground never given. Also as well as ‘following through dangerously’. Sure, studs up but trailing leg etc? I know we had some beef there during the World Cup @Azzurri Even if you win the ball first you get pinged which to me doesn’t make sense as any tackle has the momentum and getting the ball and cleaning up the man is a fine, well respected art of tackling..

Not just today, where it seemed like any foul we touched them they got, but they’d do the same - our player on the deck and nothing.

Thought I’d ask you if you think the rules change - or even if you think there is loads more contention in each decision the ref gives nowadays?

I can’t even remember the World Cup beef, but I think I was just trying to wind you up because a decision went against Australia.

It appears my attempts were successful.

Think yesterday was a case of a new ref influenced by the home crowd. Saying that though when you've got grown men on both sides throwing themselves to the floor it's all getting a bit embarrassing now. Think even Seamus let out a little screech before looking for a free kick yesterday.

The one that gets me is when a defender is shielding the ball from going over the dead ball line. Not sure when the rules changed so that you can obviously obstruct someone on that part of the pitch but no other.

I get you, I’m the same, played footy at a decent level for years and some of today’s decisions are baffling.
I thought that Arsenal player should have gotten a straight red yesterday. Can’t remember his name or who he tackled (might have been Robertson I think) his follow through was snide and dangerous.
Some penalties given are very dubious, it’s now become a game for Fanny’s.

I'm just confused full stop nowadays by what is and isn't a foul.
But what I do think is obvious is that most refs are influenced by either the crowd, the reactions of the players and which teams are playing.
How often have managers said that the so called 'big teams' always get the big decisions?
Referees are shockingly inconsistent in the Premier League.

It's normally the managers of the teams playing the big teams who complain about big teams getting decisions.

Your last line is about right. The game is now super fast, all players go to ground with the slightest touch, which makes refereeing more and more difficult and decisions will be more inconsistent. Even in the world cup we had VAR and it was still inconsistent and these fellas have half a dozen angles and replays.

Haha yeah I thought I heard someone screech out.

What is and isn’t a foul feels like its become overly complicated in interpretation. I don’t doubt VAR could come in and straighten it out but I feel like they need to sit down and redraw the rules as to what exactly constitutes a foul.

My main issue is that we are never in the positions enough to take advantage of ‘modern fouls’.

It’s no coincidence that some teams get the decisions more than others. It’s usually the teams who are in the attacking areas nearly all game who them.

I’ve got clear memories of some beautifully crunching tackles - ball and man over the sideline and it being a skill as highly regarded as beating your man or a lovely pass.

Unfortunately I think VAR will make it considerably worse. As we saw in the World Cup, there'll be penalties given for practically nothing because there was "contact".

Unless they specifically make VAR only for red cards or something, I think its going to be an absolute nightmare.

I'm as baffled as everyone else. But with the amount of play acting going on it is hard to see what constitutes a foul. When a player goes down clutching his ankle when the evidence of your eyes tells you it was a shove in the back that put him on the deck..................................confused.com

Now you say that I do remember some very dodgy decisions.

Platini (fortunately gone) announced his intention to eliminate tackling from the game. We are well on the way, unfortunately. I remember playing in the 1950's/60's. I was centre-half but fancied a go at centre-forward. I got a run at centre-forward and averaged a goal a game. After scoring two in a game, the manager told me I was being moved back to centre-half. When I asked why, he said that I never clattered the opposing goalie! In those days, tackling was akin to legalised gbh yet I can't remember ever playing in a game when someone was sent off. If tackling goes, so do I, it will be like basketball.

I don't think it was just Platini who had thay view, I think Blatter too. It would be a shock if the latest overlords had a differing view.
