Pre internet I used to buy world soccer so thought I was an expert on these kind of footballers , I obviously want but it was so satisfying to have a clue who they were come major tournaments.
I remember thinking how good Jardel was and what a shadow of himself he was when he rocked up at Bolton . Didn’t he nearly sign for rangers in his prime as well

Huge deal when he signed, everyone couldn't wait to watch MOTD. Back when clubs outside the 'big' 6 could actually sign big players.
Quite by accident I ended up playing for the same team my Dad used to play for, at an awards do one of the old heads who played in my Dad's team told me his nickname was Gentile. A bit of research and he certainly seemed to fit in with my Dads err... uncomprimising personality

Probably my standout memory of Luis Enrique though is him getting elbowed in the face by Mauro Tassotti at USA 94. Tassotti got a 9-game ban for it I think

Always felt he was a bit unlucky in being replaced by Kaka and Ronadinho, Figo etc all being high profile around this time which maybe meant he didn't get the attention he deserved but Rui Costa was unbelievably good.
