He suffered a lot from the formation he was continually asked to play, which both confused the midfield (as either Barry or Schneiderlin were doing the same job he was) and left him and the CBs exposed almost all the time by a combination of the daft possession based game and the fullbacks having to provide width. Now he doesn't have to do that he looks amazing.
