Everton's loan haven is attracting other clubs, says Roberto Martínez

Yeah, I think Roberto will sign a few players in january a then a few more during the summer and if he still feels like we could use some help at certain positions he will look at the loan market. Just like he did this past summer.

I think the economics make sense. It's really like renting instead of buying a house. If we had bought Lukaku and Del and Barry, it would have cost something like $60M, which we don't have. Even on 4-year installments, that transfer splurge would cost all the TV money in one fell swoop. This way, we don't gain if they become more valuable (two certainly will), but we also don't lose if they become less (Barry's value will likely drop in coming years), and don't have to shell out the big bucks. Few here would argue that we're one big bust away from being solidly mid-table for half a decade.

People here can debate whether we should get players on loan, but the fact is there's nothing bad about other teams wanting to loan us their best young players, seeing as we trust the manager to pick ones who can help us win games, and ones that can possibly become permanent transfers. I, for one, trust the smoky-eyed Spaniard to make these decisions.

The ready remedy for this is a salary cap with performance based bonuses so the players can participate in League and CL success. Salary cap for first team players (squad of 20) at 100 million pounds/year??...just throwing that number out there based on an average salary of 100K/week (crazy amount when you think of it)

Salary cap will never fly imo, since for it to be effective, you would need all of world football to be in on it, and I don't think that can get done. The roster limit just seems more doable world wide via FIFA, and less likely to see a full on player revolt. The players won't like it because it will put downward pressure on wages, but a lot less than a cap would.

Sadly all a salary cap would mean is that the best players leave England/don't come thus the league becomes more boring.

While I can uderstand some people saying that it is embarrassing that we are touting for loan players, and in a way it is, but if we look at where Everton are at the moment, we are not in a posistion to be able to buy players like Lukaku outright. Therefore the sensible thing to do is borrow them for a year or 2. We get a better player than we would otherwise afford, and that could be the difference between Europa league and Champions league.
It is certainly not a long term model - the aim should be to use those loan signings to help us qualify for the Champions league which will give us the funds required to be able to buy those players in years to come.

As long as we are borrowing players better than the ones we have, and not just to fill a hole in the squad (eg Senderos, Gardiner etc) I don't have an issue with it

yes, it would require 'global agreement' and enforceability/policing could be problematic. So I agree with the alternative idea of roster limitations...more transparent and thus easily policed.

Well articulated and agree 100%. As a short term model, Everton's loanee system is working splendidly. It's win-win for loaner and loanee so works for me.
I like that we are looking at some very young(future) talent as well (those Scottish lads apparently). This is where the scouts and a managers football nous are so valuable. Buy assets when they are cheap and let them appreciate on our books

Which will effect morale most? Lukaku here for a year, banging in goals, followed by another quality striker on loan to do the same... Or Jelavic not banging in goals for several seasons?

If the loans are good enough, the team will improve, if the team improves we've made the right move imo.

Not a bad thing at all but it would be nice to think if we wanted to buy any that were successful then we could.

Unfortunately were going to struggle to keep them If they're boss.Still better to have loved and lost as they say.

Basically bobby just said

'We have our pick'

Whats not to like?

so in other words we can go to Barcalona, Real Madrid, and Bayern and say. "Do you want to loan us Morata, Shaqiri etc" theres nothing wrong with Cherry Picking the potentially world class young players for a couple years (we'll prob have delboy for two years) and getting great young players for a few years minus a big transfer fee. Sounds good to me, particularly for a club that struggles financially like ours, its an effective way of picking up great players cheaply, getting good publicity and forming good relationships with the big european clubs so that we can buy the players they have no use for.

A couple of years finishing in European spots and then all of the sudden we have enough money to compete on a regular basis.

It's a brilliant long-term strategy for growing the club in my opinion.

Without the loan system allowing Roberto to work his magic this summer (alongside signing McCarthy), we would be bottom half. Take this season - would you all prefer we didn't have the three loan players?

How about next, Barry signs permanently and we make a couple of other shrewd permanent signings. Then a couple of loans

The next summer, we buy a couple more young players like McCarthy, promote a couple of youth players we've been signing over the two years. And a couple of loans and frees. See how the team is improving?

If we qualify for the champions league in that time we get the chance to build even quicker, and having these loans makes it possible

But if we don't loan players, we have no chance of doing anything.
For me the loan system means we can have now AND the future , and Roberto is clever enough to use it

Though I have to say I think domestic loans will be gone after this year if we get top 4. People are kicking up a right fuss already
