Everton's loan haven is attracting other clubs, says Roberto Martínez

embarassing

we've been reduced to openly touting for other clubs players to develop them. feeding off scraps from the big boys table, because, lets face it, we will never be able to afford our own.

lad, even if we had 11 loan players on the pitch and we won a cup or got top 4 I really wouldn't be arsed.

Spot on, we've got to be realistic, the loan market has and will work well for us. It's nothing new Yobo, Arteta & Pienaar all came on loan

Id rather get a top quality loan signing in them scrimp and buy a player who im isnt going to improve the squad. Only the top 4/5 dont use the loan system , even the ****e have got in a few in on loan. While its there we may as well use it to our benefit - if we dont someone else will

It is a touch embarrassing, us been seen a 'stepping stone', but if it helps us be successful then it won't be long before we're seeking our own feeder clubs.

i get what you are saying.

but maybe it could go like this we loan a player. this said player looks fooking ace parent club recalls him said player is ****e so parent club now want rid quick.

player has been touched by efc and wants to come back.

and said player then turns out ace.

something like that anyway

So, a strategy to get quality players in, albeit temporarily, that could put us into CL places, which would grant us exposure, cashflow, and a higher image amongst potential buyers & sponsors...that would then, possibly, put us in the position where we have a better bottom line & might one day allow us to loan our young stars out (read Barkley a few years ago), is bad? Am I reading that right?

We don't have a pot to p*** in, loans are our only option to strengthen so we may get used to it. If it means bringing young players like Romelu and Gerard to the club for the season, sound by me.

spot on mate...good reply. Better than the big oak thing I came up with!!

It's about balance really. We've got to be able to sign player permanently and have them as our core, then we bring players on loan to add to our core and to be honest we are no far away from it. We'll have money to spend for the next couple of windows (hopefully) and I'm sure Roberto will be looking to add a few players on a permanent who can add to what we already have. If he could sign say two first XI quality players, like Fernando and Batshuayi for example, and then bring two more on loan, then that would be great because for the most part the core of the team will be intact, we will only be adding to it.

On the other hand you could make an argument for not having a loan system at all. It would cut down on the stockpiling. Perhaps younger players would insist on first team football and clubs might be less willing to fork out big money for players they know will sit the bench or rot in the reserves.

This. FIFA really should limit the amount of players above a certain age that a club can have on its books. As it stands now, RM or City can sign 20 boss midfielders to huge contracts. The players are happy because they are getting paid, and those that can't get on the field know they can go play elsewhere on loan.

Yeah great point. They can sign, get paid and then still play on loan.

Roster limits are a no brainer.

I think this is really good,I get why some people could not really like the fact we'd be getting used as a steeping stone for players but I haven't heard anyone complain about having Del or Lukaku. This gives us the chance to have some of the best young talent in the world at the club who can make an impact, if the clubs also want them to come here that means that they're not going to require much of a fee for them to come here either. This doesn't mean we're not going to sign or bring in any other players it just means we're getting some really good young players who can improve the squad and make us a better team for basically nothing.

Yes, a fair point indeed. Worthy of its own thread.

Until that system is in place, I think RM has used the current system to great effect. Personally, I'd much rather we were signing these types of players but there is no level playing field at the moment. We use the system to better ourselves & see what happens next season.

It is what it is, it's not like you can field a whole side of loan players. The main thing is the quality of the baller and what they can bring; Rom and Delo being two great examples. We've done exactly what you'd want to do with respect to loans, that's why it's even being talked about.

The ready remedy for this is a salary cap with performance based bonuses so the players can participate in League and CL success. Salary cap for first team players (squad of 20) at 100 million pounds/year??...just throwing that number out there based on an average salary of 100K/week (crazy amount when you think of it)
