Four Everton youngsters were named among the England Under-19 and Under-20 squads on Thursday.

Summer signing Mason Holgate and goalkeeper Russell Griffiths were included in Keith Downing's 20-man Under-20 group for a friendly against Czech Republic on 7 September.

It is Holgate's first ever international call-up while Griffiths had previously been in an England Under-19 party last term.

Meanwhile, Jonjoe Kenny and Callum Connolly have been named in the latest Under-19 squad.

The young duo were included in Aidy Boothroyd’s 20-man group for the games in Germany and Croatia next month when it was announced on Thursday.

Defender Kenny, 18, is currently on loan at Wigan Athletic, while 17-year-old Connolly is a regular for the Blues’ Under-21 side.

The two international friendlies will serve as the Young Lions’ preparation for the first qualifying round of the European Under-19 Championships, which takes place in October.

Kenny and Connolly will therefore be hoping to cement their place with their upcoming performances in Bergisch Gladbach and Zagreb on Friday 4 and Monday 7 September respectively.

Just noticed a report about the England U17 game and out of interest looked at the England squads for the U17 and U16 recent games. Although we have the EFC three in the U18s we don't have any who played recently for the lower ages, which seemed quite unusual after the run that we have had with the academy.

Are they trying out different players? Is our 'golden generation' run of youth players starting to come to an end? Or are our better players at those ages perhaps not English?

Our age group (now under 19's/18's was exceptionally strong). At under 19 we had Ledson and Kenny (and Graham for Wales being represented. The year below we have had Dowell, Walsh, Connolly, Brewster and then Yates, Davies and Holland.

This is quite incredible and was noted as such by many observers. At victory shield games we'd often have 5-6 players on show. For most clubs to get 1 player on the pitch is a fine achievement.

I am surprised that Evans hasn't had any recognition yet. It's not the be all and end all though. Our age groups below don't have the same buzz about them that our current under 18's had, who would go months on end without losing. I am sure there is still talent in there though.

Strange ledson not in the 19's
And like some have said we've had great teams at under 18 for the last 2yrs
And not to have players at under 17's is strange especially Evans

I think there has been new coaches at quite a few youth levels with England

And to me there always seems to be a southern bias in a lot of the youth squads
With the token Man Utd & Liverpool player thrown in

Would be interesting to see how many middlesborough players made the under 17's
As they pipped us to the under 18 title last year

You would know better than me mate

But I remember reading maybe 2/3 yrs ago about a really young Everton team under 12/13?

That had gone 30+ plus games unbeaten and give out a few hammerings to some of the big clubs
Could have been bull [Poor language removed] internet rumours

Has Ledson's progress stalled? Was earmarked to start a game at the end of the 2013/14. With that in mind I possibly would have expected him to have had some playing time since then?
I'm far from an expert but I've noticed he hasn't started as many u/21 games as of late.

Are the likes of Davies and Walsh playing good football and not allowing him to get as much game time or has developement slowed a little.

steven gerrard didnt get any international recognition until england u21s so as you says its not the be all and end all. a lot of players are likely missed at underage level.

It was probably a little longer than that, and it would have been our current under 18's crop.

Yes it is strange about Ledson. Not bad though that we have 8 players in recently announced England squads: Yates, Davies, Holland @18;Kenny, Connolly@19; Holgate, Griffiths @20; Galloway @21.
You could throw in another 9 who have represented other countries in the past year at various 17-21 age groups : Byrne , Charsley @Ireland, Broadhead, Jones, Graham , Harrington @ Wales; Lavery N Ireland ; Robinson USA, Henen Belgium.
Then add in Dowell, Evans, Walsh , Pennington, plus any others like Joe Williams who you can't rule out making the step up yet and you get 20 plus young players under 20 hence the "GoldenGeneration" tag. Two players per year breaking into the first team squad is a great return and not unachievable eg.Stones/Barkley 2 years ago then Galoway/Browning last season.

Adding to the above post and the Welsh contingent , Gethin Jones has been named in U21 squad, James Graham and Nathan Broadhead in the u19 squad , both squads play games in September . Aaron Jones, Goalkeeper and 16 year old first year scholar, played in the u17 squad against Greece on Tuesday and was on the bench against Greece on Thursday.
Broadhead seems to have have started the season really well and at 17 looks like he's playing a year up , though I'm not sure if Wales u18s have games. It will be interesting to see if he has further impact in the internationals.

Gethin Jones is the u21 captain and was also training with the first team before the last qualifiers

Ugo Ehiogu is looking for our Under-21s to make a positive start to their Premier League International Cup campaign on the big stage of Goodison Park this afternoon (Bank Holiday Monday, August 31).

Our youngsters have travelled north to take on Everton in the first of three games in the opening stage of the competition, with home matches against Schalke and Porto to come later in the season.
Under-21s Coach Ugo, who has already seen his charges defeat the Toffees in the Barclays Under-21 Premier League this term, says the opportunity to play at a Premier League stadium is one the boys will relish.
And he has called for the players to continue the sharpness they’ve shown in training following the disappointment of last weekend’s narrow loss at Sunderland.
“It’s always disappointing to lose football matches but the reaction from the players has started already in training and we want that to continue in the game with all the things we’ve talked about with the individuals,” said Ugo.
“The players have been hungry and aggressive on the training pitches this week and the quality has been good.
“Obviously it’s a new competition for us today but the opposition probably makes it more of a league game in some ways.
“Naturally we want to win the match and try to qualify as early as possible, while an added bonus for us is that we’re playing at Goodison Park. It’s another massive stadium and to have the opportunity to play there gives more valuable experience to the boys.”
Kick-off is at 2pm today. Follow us on Twitter @SpursOfficial for live updates from the game.
Squad: Glover, Voss, Amos, Georgiou, Goddard, Harrison, Lesniak, Maghoma, Onomah, Owens, Sonupe, Stylianides, Walker-Peters, Walkes, Winks.
