Everton Youth Teams Thread

Dyson scored again for Stockport, and Thorniley played too. Highlights with commentary here, the goal's around 2:30. Also this video has the best intro to a highlights video you'll ever see.

Good experience for them both, Thorniley looked like he was getting a tough time but up for it - there won't be many times in his career where his clearance is credited with " high into the hotel".
I see Jonjoe Kenny played a full game for Wigan and Junior 56 mins yesterday, no real info on how they did.

Looking on the Wigan forum, they seem to think Kenny is too young to be playing at that level. Also they love Junior and want him to sign for them.

Well I see that as excellent on both counts! If Kenny is thought of as young , but the manager keeps picking him then it suggests he's at the right level. At 18 he's the same age as Thorniley , who is a few months older but playing 3 divisions below Kenny. It is a tough ask for an 18 year old trying to make an impact at a new club compared to say coming through as a youngster at a League1 club you've been at for years. Obviously he's got lots to learn but if he can hold onto that place he will be doing really well. It's nice to see Junior doing well too and getting games, would love to see him establish himself at this level and kick on again even if it means letting him go for free/ cheap.

Not specific to Everton this but im posting it in here in case anyone has a good understanding of youth team football in this country.

For a youngster is it better to join a league 1 or 2 academy or attend a premier league elite development centre? I understand that there are categories for academies but is that just about budgets/facilities. Would you turn down the development centre in favour of the academy? Or turn down the lower league academy in favour of a premier league development centre? Interested in your thoughts...

....it's so easy to be enticed by the more glamorous clubs but you really need to consider the bigger picture. Part of the decision has to be the character and ability of the kid involved. If you have a Rooney with supreme ability and belief it doesn't matter. Some kids might be more comfortable and develop better at a smaller club.

I don't like the club attitude. They make it seem like they are doing you a favour but release kids as quickly as getting them on board. If you have a diamond it's a different matter. Let the kid go where he's happiest and most settled, then he can enjoy his footy regardless of whether he comes through or not.

Pleased to see Eunan O'Kane playing for Bournemouth tonight.

I saw him play against Cambridge United for us in a pre-season game once and he looked a good talent. He then went to Torquay and has worked himself back up.

Im certainly no expert but id suggest going along to certain clubs and meeting people there to assess the "vibe". Also of course asking other parents (im assuming you are one) how their kids are getting on...perhaps the clubs could put you in touch.

At a young age id probably look at each in a similar way to a school.
