I reckon this could possibly be one of the smallest match threads due to the disappearance of the Martinez bashers. Probably hurt pride. Or just maybe they may make an appearance on how we only beat 10 men and how lucky we were, they should have had a penalty, Krul should have stopped the shot etc etc. I await patiently for the reasons how we were fortunate and lucky.

Waiting for someone to say the only reason we won was because Newcastle were crap, Also, someone to say if we would have been playing a decent team today they would have punished us.

So, what have we (I) learned from today?
1. We do not need Barry in every game. Great midfield against the Skunks- though McCarthy took a long time to recover from that knock and should probably have been subbed in readiness for the next game, which may decide our season
2. Atsu (who I was amazed replaced Lennon- he had a good game but still not much end product) looks really good, though slower than Lennon(?)
3. How much better are we when playing to a higher tempo with some longer than 5 yard passes?
4. Alcaraz is actually pretty good
5. Lukako finally seems to be learning how to trap the ball

Excellent result, which will mean nothing unless we carry it onto next Sunday
Can't wait for Thursday

good win lads. 4 points off 11th. only saw about 10 mins, will watch the extended highlights after.

howard with a clean sheet, guessing they didn't muster a shot on target?
Made a couple of great saves actually. One only a few mins in, so huge

I will bet my cock he puts Barry straight back in, even after that looking like a proper functioning team for a change.

We would have played well with Barry in the team today. The mindset was right - we played off the strikers instead of retaining possession in midfield and going sideways.

Barry has been an unfair scapegoat due to the way we have played, which has allowed teams to take advantage of his lack of mobility. In a confident side playing further up the pitch, Barry is an asset.

No Besic no problems. 2 wins without that clown and at last we have footballers in osman and gibson on the pitch
Kind of know what your trying to say as we seem to have too many defensive midfielders playing but besic is in my opinion is a better option than a Barry and maybe a sub option for mcarthy

Jesus Christ @Kev The Rat You can't enjoy the moment, can You? Please learn: Besic is a defender minded player with INSTRUCTIONS to defend whilst Gibson is an attacking minded with INSTRUCTIONS to attack. And to mention he was poor today alas the few good balls. McCarthy was way better than him. And just please enjoy the win.

Overall though, now the game has ended, far too much sloppy play imo. Too many balls conceded to the opposition in midfield and lots of sloppy attacking play too. Coleman made some poor decisions. My motm, from the 60 minutes I saw, was James McCarthy. Jags was a rock in defence. It was nice to see Barkley get on the scoresheet after a quality through-ball from Atsu. As i commented in the Dynamo Kiev thread, Lukaku is finally looking like the £28 million player we paid for. It's onwards and upwards now. Please!!!.....
We still have a lot of work to do off the ball. We haven't closed down well enough this season and have defended the box rather than mixing it with the opposition. This defending of the box allows the opposition time and space to make decisions, and that's the last thing we can afford to do. Pre-season needs a hell of a lot of work off the ball. We did show more intent with the ball today although it wasn't as smooth as last season but at least we are trying to get from back to front quicker

Osman was wonderful however Newcastle's defending suited him.

You can only play what's in front of you though. No coincidence he's back in the side and our tempo and movement gradually gets better and that in turn will bring the confidence back.

Considering the effort they put in for an hour on Thursday today was a real gutsy performance with some excellent football being played.

Agree and thought Barry was excellent on thursday night and got overlooked a bit in praising the good performers, on here.
