Everton v man City. Fa cup semi 1969

Before I was born but I've got the programme. Was always fascinated by the aerial photo of Villa Park on the back.

….managed to play there not too long after that game and it was a classy stadium. Entrance onto the pitch was by the corner flag and the dressing rooms were enormous with individual baths with absolutely boiling hot water. Ian Atkins was in opposition that day, he put me up in the air on the half-way line

…..I was there, 12yo. What a way to loose. I was also at Wembley for the Jeff Astle goal in ‘68.

I still remember a City fan saying to me outside the ground, ‘never mind son, you’ll have plenty of good times supporting Everton’.
He forgot to finish the sentence with " but for god's sake change teams when you get to forty!"

My dad could only get 2 tickets and was taking my older brother even though I was going to far more matches.
As it happened neither of them made the game as my brother got in a bit of trouble with the police the night before the game.
To say i was angry was an understatement as if i had had the ticket i would have been tucked up in bed by 9 0clock.

Too young to remember.

I must have started following Alan Ball and the Blues the following season as I had a Shoot double page pic of the squad with the Championship Trophy on my wall. Bally was my hero and when I got my first kit, my Ma ironed a no. 8 on the jersey.

My earliest football memories are Brazil 1970 and my older brother bringing me to see Everton play their then annual friendly with Rovers. They came over every year from 1967 to 1972.

The venues are not all correct in this link. I am sure 1970 was Milltown, 72 probably was Daly mount but 91 was definitely the RDS.

My brother is a life long Red Manc, but he wrote to Brian Labone to congratulate him when we won the League (my brother was 13) and true to form, Labby replied thanking him and saying if only all supporters were so sporting it would be wonderful.

My dodgy memory tells me that Colin Bell and company usually beat us in those days and that that semi final was no surprise to me. The horrible ones were the WBA final and the WHU semi final.
Howard Kendall was not fit & they man marked Alan ball out of the game & put ten men behind the ball - awful game - I watched the highlights I was there & seen nothing but blues fans get crushed in the Holt end at the back ....

M6 there was a massive traffic jam on the way down arrived 15 minutes late - a disaster of a day & game ....

Awful game..wet day..bad pitch..but I always thought that City was physically a stronger team...also, EFC were weaker in the air..

A waste of time going when fans were being squashed & sick feinting at the back of the Holt end - Evertonians had kicked the exit doors in at the back terraces & thousands with out tickets poured in ... could have been another Hillsborough back in he day - many fans crushed - many like us stood in the back isle could not get a spec to see the game ...

My brother was a big man & he could not push into the wall of fans it was jam tight ....no St Johns ambulance men anywhere .... some fans were crushed & were sick on the pathway on other fans ....

I got home watched the game & the Holt end at the front looked fine .....packed but spacious compared to the back were the doors had been kicked in open ....

The heaving masses at matches then was a real life threatening factor and looking back again that and the hooliganism make me wonder why there were not more deaths.

The last half hour of thygame, I lay on the Holte end white wall, half way up.. good view and safer than in heaving crowd.. occasionally see myself in highlights of the game.. 14 at the time.. Michael Gill Croxteth.
