The ref is there to be a (disliked) authoritarian figure... NOT to say 'it was a pleasure, Mo.' There should be no banter with the players. The ref just tells them the decision (good or bad) and that's that. They are all too star struck and desperately want to bask in the reflected glory of the 'bog name players. Weak!
