Everton Under 21s (aka the Reserves)

Personally I think there are better coaches than Stubbs.

Dave Watson, for example, did great with Wigan's youth teams and got headhunted by Newcastle, where he is now their reserves manager.

Certainly the manager of our reserves should be someone with a track record of some type of youth/reserve football success, and not just an ex-captain with no previous experience. People shouldnt be starting their coaching careers in charge of our reserves, they should be proving themselves first.

I don't think we ever properly replaced the likes of Colin Harvey to be honest.

And hey it could clearly be a case of the likes of Barkley, Velios plus others consider themselves first teamers and find the whole reserve team crap beneath them.

Well they're not first teamers. And your argument was that they shouldn't be first teamers yet and this performance proves that.

And all I'm saying is that if Barkley is still not good enough to replace phil neville in midfield within the next couple of years then we've done a bad job coaching him. He looked comfortable in our midfield against both QPR and Blackburn and has bossed england youth games.

Maybe a loan is what he needs though if the problem is the league more than anything else.

Hopefully some of them get on the pitch Wednesday and we can make a better asssement, but to be fair, I saw a window and sneaked my agenda in.

Its wrong to write them off on just a scoreline in 1 game.

Untill I see "them" play a good few 1st teams games its all guesswork about how good/bad they are.

You're right. Hopefully they can get on the pitch against orient and show us what they've got.

You are absolutely right about not writing them off based on one game, but this isn't just one game.

Drawing 0-0 with Conference side Hereford, a performance Stubbs slammed and demanded a reaction from the players in the next game. They lost the next game 2-1 at Tranmere in another bad performance.

And now the first two games of what is only a 14 game season until January remember, 1-3 away at WBA and now a 1-5 humiliation at home to West Ham.

This is a very important season for the reserves/u-21s, because of the league getting reorganised in January, and to put it bluntly, this is a really bad time to be crap as the consequences will be playing in a lesser division and not with the likes of Utd, City, or the RS. It also has a knock on effect, because our young fringe players will not be being tested at a high level, and wont be as experienced/ready for the first team when called upon (for games such as the Orient game possibly).

I think the reserves set up badly needs a shake up with new coaching blood being brought in.

Wow thats disappointing. They really need to get their act together soon. :/ I think it's unfair to write off the youth, we know for fact that some them can do job in the premier league (if only for 15 minutes). I thought our reserves last year were one of the best in league right? Looks like Baxter, Forshaw, etc left a big hole in the reserves.

It's an attacking side- Barkley, Lundstram, Green and Garbutt (presumably) in midfield. I've seen the goals and West Ham were able to run unchallenged at the defence and take pot shots from the edge of the box. It's a concern given the amount of talent that we've got in the squad that we're not troubling the opposition more and that we're not competitive.

Nope.

I want them all to superb, but they aint.

But you wanna believe that Moist is holding them all back.

I don't think Moyes is holding them back as such because i've barely seen them play, don't know if the are good enough to play an y kind of role in the first team squad.

But some should be, in our financial position they need to be, its vitally important for us that we can at worst provide squad players ala Hibbert and Anichebe who cost the club nothing but have a useful role to play. Better would be nice but unlikely.

Its the myth that Everton are the club that gives youth a chance which gets me. Sure, over the years some have had game time but those players are getting fewer and fewer, while moyes might of tried to give a chance in the past in recent seasons none of our youth have been given a chance in the first team except through injury crisises.

It could only be good for our young reserve players to get game time in the first team when the chance arrives. But they don't.

Moyes is too cautious and will prefer to use a more experienced player instead of a less experienced player and that cannot help their development.

Maybe they are all way too gash to even get that, maybe Stubbs is a crap coach or maybe there are other reasons.

But our youth aren't getting game time in the first team even if thats 10 mins at the end of games if there is an alternative. And they certainly aren't starting games and being given a chance which they could take with both hands and step up.

Yesterday was a perfect chance for Barkley to get 15 mins. He didn't and we had no other youth even on the bench. Youth didn't even get 15 mins at the end of last season when we were winning 4-0 and resting players which would of been great for them.

Somethings going wrong with our youth players and its not good.

Very well put my friend

would have thought it would be at London Colney - disappointing that there isn't much info on the web site - there are some strong players in the squad who have featured in the 1st team so bit of a puzzle as to the results me thinks it coud be a question of the coach and team selection/tactics - lets hope for a better result against Arsenal - I think that IF they lose - as long as they played well andgive a good account of themselves that's all you can ask - as for breaking into the 1st team - nothing gonna change there at the mo - they're playing like a dream and it will be difficult for any young player to step up
