Everton 'too good to go down'?

Can anyone post any examples of this second season syndrome.

A team that has consistently finished top 7 for years and full of internationals.

The term is used for small clubs that over achieved in their first year of top flight football; Ipswich, Bradford etc etc

Definitely 3 worse teams in the league
Player wise then I wholeheartedly agree, however quality alone is not enough this season where it is much closer than in the past.

Teams like Burnley clearly have guile and determination to stay up; they have a style of play which is underpinned by a purpose.

On the other hand, our squad looks completely lost of all confidence, drive and focus. Are they overly complacent about our league status?

QPR, Hull and Villa have all won the same amount of games as us this season and they're nowhere near as strong as our squad.

As @nsno-chris mentioned, I do not attribute this to some form of syndrome that will be merely solved by a new season and new names.

Instead, I think it's rigidity fuelled by complacency combined with an egoistic belief that a singular approach will produce the desired effects.

In essence that is what concerns me about the view or belief that Martinez can and will turn things around next season.

If he has been unwilling (or unable) to adapt our approach even though it has clearly not worked, then why believe he will change next season?

We've attempted to play the same approach as last season although teams have developed counter measures. Next season it could be suicidal.

In business if you are rigid then you're likely to come unstuck; if you follow an approach which is haemorrhaging cash then you get little sympathy.

Why should that be any different in football? We may have the quality but we aren't using our assets. If we do down then it's our own fault.

Our players (acknowledgements to DamoFont) are too good to do down, apart from Howard who is playing 2 divisions above his level. So why are we near the drop ?

I don't think we will go down. But to say anybody is 'too good' to go down is nonsense, you're only as good as your last game.

We may have a boss team on paper, but unfortunately we're crap on grass at the minute.

This is it, and when folk go on about last season which is a pointless historical exercise.

We probably won't be going down.

In the same way we probably won't win the Europa League.

The bookies have us 20/1 for relegation and 12/1 to win the Europa.
We are twice as likely to win the Europa than go down.
Wolfsburg are favourites and we battered them. Twice.

Roberto Martinez is 8/1 to be sacked mate.

We are twice as likely to win the Europa League ..... With the bookies. Great.

As for Wolfsburg, I would not want to play them again. The least convicting 4-1 win I've ever seen.

And they haven't lost in 18 games, their last loss being against us in November.

We're not too good to go down. We're also not "definitely staying up" until it's a mathematical certainty, that's either arrogance or ignorance talking. Second season syndrome is term used for promoted sides that stayed up and whether they can maintain that level for another season. Bobby's issue is called stubborn arrogance, and I think if Lukaku hadn't called him out in the press we'd still be playing it short constantly and not even playing the odd longer ball.
Blah blah plotters blah last season, blah.

I agree the collective is better than the table suggests...a lot better. But there are some players who I feel have peaked and are in their decline. This makes things difficult in terms of perceptions as we look at players like Jags, Howard and Baines and see three quality players but they're not what they were in my opinion.

There are squad changes needed in the very near future which means we are entering a tricky phase. Buy well and the young crop will prosper.
