I'm an addicted Football Manager player and football tactic lover. I'm trying to replicate the Martinez style in a game and I want to know everything about it. Of course I watched every single game of our beloved Toffees this season (and I attended Roberto first ever game with us in Vien) and I know how we're playing and what is Bobby's system but I want to create the thread where we can talk about it and put some useful links to understand it better. Something like our own Everton Coffeehouse :)

I did my research and found some great articles, here are the links:

Hope you'll provide some more :)

I excluded games against Arsenal and City (from zonalmarking) because that were experiments from Bobby and we didn't play like that on a regular basis.

What is your opinion about our future system of play? Do you think Roberto will change something or does he have one philosophy which he is sticking with? I mean let's look at Rodgers first season at RS and how he changed his whole tactical concept in this year. It was a revolution. I want to know your thoughts.

And sorry for my english, I'm trying my best but I know it's not good enough.

That's boss

...I suggest a very important ingredient in RMs 'style' is getting into the players minds to enjoy themselves and play without fear. This then allows us to play with confidence against even the very best.

Your English is perfectly fine lad.
The reason why our system failed to work effectively for me in the first 3 games was that the players in our midfield weren't able to transition from midfield into defence allowing the wingbacks to push forward as far as they do now. At the moment, when they have the ball we drop into a 4 5 1, but when we get the ball we move into a 3 4 3 with either Macca or Barry dropping to play as a 3rd CB. Coleman talked about this recently where he talked about how the tireless work of Macca allowed him to push forward a lot more.
I think this season we'll see more of a move towards this tactical fluidity, perhaps going 3 at the back for some games.
Honestly for me the main area of improvement for us needs to be set pieces. We are dire at them, and are missing out on a fair few goals because of this.
We've also transitioned as a side to become more counter attacking, mostly because of how suited Barkley is to that type of game and the pace of our players. I think we certainly need a number 10/Pienaar/Osman type player this transfer window to unlock us some defences, because sometimes our possession is just possession around the box and is being wasted, as we lack the final ball.

Roberto seem not to care much about set pieces, corners especially. He said once:

“89 per cent of shots on goal from corners are wasted,” they write. “How does that translate into real terms? When we combine the odds of corners generating a shot on goal, plus the odds that these shots will find the back of the net, our data shows that the average corner is worth 0.022 goals, or – more simply – that the average Premier League team scores a goal from a corner once every 10 games."

“‘Corners are next to worthless; given the risk of being caught on the counter-attack, with your central defenders marooned in the opposition’s box, their value in terms of net goal difference is close to zero.”

I don't think he will change his mind on that matter.

And I aggree completely with a second part. We were playing slightly different on a later stage of this season i.e against United they had over 60% of possesion (something which didn't occured in early stages) and we killed them with pace-based counter-attacks. It is always great to have a Plan B and I'm happy that Roberto developed it :)

Here is a statistical analysis of our season from todays Echo: http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/spor...iew-statistical-7169822#.U4GeJ9wmigk.facebook

I love analysing our tactics after a game. I'm not the best tactician so I struggle to analyse other teams tactics in depth based on one or two games (normally the games against us) because I have a much better idea of our players jobs on the pitch. The change in tactics, even to an untrained person like myself, is striking over the course of just one season.

The loss at Anfield was a watershed in RM's tactical appreciation evolution (imo)...great managers learn from experience; Bobby learned a lot that day

Those experiments with different formations, even though they are exceptions to our usual style, could come in very handy if change is forced on us through injuries etc, or if we find an advantage tactically.

Already the team has been able to change the approach from patient possession to counter attacking within a single game, due to the 4-2-3-1 allowing for both. The next step is to find an optional formation to make us less predictable.

If RM really did say that about corners I disagree, it might be the stats prove him right but I always felt we had a chance from corners when we had Cahill and big Dunc there. Furthermore, we must have conceded several goals from corners, so we could at least gain something from working on defending set pieces.

I was afraid Roberto's blueprint of passing the ball to death was doomed to failure, games away against Palace, West Brom at home stand out as being games were he had no plan B. I was proved wrong thankfully, his tactic's against Arsenal and United at home proved that he indeed has a plan B, Lukaku on the right wing was a masterstroke and conceding possession and playing on the counter against United proved Bobby does indeed mix up his tactics, I think it was evident that Rodgers meanwhile had no plan B in the games against Chelsea and Palace his stubbornness or arrogance cost them the title in the end.

I would like Roberto to work on corners this pre-season all the same

I agree with all of this, particularly the bit about putting Lukaku on the right wing against Arsenal - a touch of genius.
