Everton: Portrait of Premier League Purgatory

fairly condescending of our club i thought that. He said nothing which hasn't been said before in fact it looks like he copied and pasted half of it. The football landscape changes we don't know what our future holds and neither does anybody else. He is another ignorant man who believes Everton FC, a club that has been around since 1878 and the 4th most succesful in english football, will simply fade away should David Moyes leave. That just shows pure ignorance of the game and a lack of respect to us 'aging' fans.

exactly, we were the 4th most successful club when moyes came and we haven't won anything whilst he's been here. the way it's written is like he's won us 2/9 of those league titles. ah well, little old everton plod along again.

It's funny just how ingrained it has become with some, that if you spend more you finish better. They are seeing clubs as bigger than us cause we spend more, rather than seeing us as better than them cause we spend less.

It's become the normal 'pluck ol' Everton' for just about every 'journalist' out there.

Watch our games regularly, then comment. Otherwise, just **** off..

Thanks.

The Journalists really do piss me off. They are always quick to have a go that we haven't won a League Title for a quarter of a century but then these same ****wits start talking about how clubs like Newcastle and Spurs are massive. Spurs last won the League in 1961. We have won 4 League Titles since then which is double their overall tally anyway. Those Geordie [Poor language removed] haven't won a title since 1927! So where are the articles for them? And then you have the red ****e. Their last league title came 2/3 years after our last. Any mention of them as a sinking ship then?

In fairness, since their last league title, they've won the FA Cup and League Cup three times each as well as a couple of European trophies, whereas we've won one FA Cup.

He's written about us as if we're in the same situation as Portsmouth or Rangers. While not well off by any means, we're not exactly in meltdown. One sentence says our financial loss is small, another says our future is bleak.

Made me a little annoyed with the author to be honest.

I don't think that's what he meant at all. In fact, it seems he praises the club because it has essentially been unchanged since the Premier League era where the other clubs have dabbled with foreign investment allowing for them to capture fan bases they normally shouldn't have a right to. He is also writing this for a wider American audience who have barely any idea about Everton.

Nor do I think he says Moyes is the club, he is writing that a club like Everton which runs off a shoestring needs a gaffer with a likewise transfer market policy. The article is more about Moyes than it is about Everton. Your looking at it the wrong way.

As long as Moyes is manager, we will likely always be in the Premier League, but until we have investment we won't finish higher. That's my opinion anyway.

Strange way to look at it...

How about since Spurs last won their league title we have won 4 League Titles, 3 FA Cups and a ECWC. Would you have our 4 league titles (added to the 5 we already had) or their League and FA Cups. Whilst every trophy is great to win, the League Cup and UEFA cup are both second rate competitions as well. Give me our trophy cabinet anyday.

There was hardly any of it I disagreed with, the truth hurts, as a club we have become non-descript to outsiders.

"best of the rest" is the most damning of faint praise and I'm afraid this "plucky everton" stuff is self inflicted by accepting (some revelling) in the "7th place trophy", it isn't always said with irony.

The "money is all" thesis underscoring the piece is being challenged by Moyes of all people. Adventure in the transfer market wheeler dealing notably Bily and Rodwell is producing adventure and improvement on the pitch.

Now that is irony.

(wonder why he didn't do it years ago!)

I was talking about Liverpool.

To a large extent I agree with Nails - this reads to me more like a comment on Moyes, but it's set in the context of a completely different financial landscape to the days of 'our glorious history'. What this says is that history really means very little towards success in a world where money is so dominant in footbal and also so unequally distributed.

Look at ManC when they were as financially challenged as we are - they were a championship club, or at best a yo-yo club. Suddenly they're prem champs and the future is bright. Similarly, look at us before Moyes arrived, we avoided becoming a championship/yo-yo club by the skin of our teeth, on two or three occasions. Now, we patently are not - there must be someting to the Moyes effect therefore, but to his misfortune he happens to be plying his trade in an age where money has all but blown away recognition of proper management skills (btw if anyone thinks that tool running City is a good manager, I really do pity you!).

I was talking about Liverpool.

Fair enough, was thinking you meant Spurs. I'm not arguing against Liverpool's success compared to ours i'm just stating that even the biggest clubs like Liverpool and Arsenal have been struggling to win titles for years so it's a bit narrow minded of the article to aim digs at us.

THIS. Very well put.

Same crap about Moyes being bigger than the club and that he should move on beacause he has takin us as far as he can

If you listen closely you can here Arsenal,Utd,Spurs and Chelsea beating down Kenwrights door to demand talks with him
