Watching Bainsey today made me wonder how many caps he'd have ended up with if Ashley Cole wassn't around.
Even at his age now he still has that footballing brain and touch.
Who else as a great missed out through similar circmstances?
I can think of about a dozen. Interested to hear your views.

I felt that we won that Legends Game today on fitness, since our players seemed to be younger and sharper, with Baines a notable example. Watching Baines today, I still think he could do a job for someone at a lower league level, especially given that his desire to get forward has not disappeared.

If you were to ask me about my opinion on modern attacking full-backs, I would point to Baines as one of the pioneers of that role. He would have probably collected more international caps had he been starting out his career with us now than he would have done around fifteen years ago. As you say, England also had Ashley Cole back then, but the best England can show for left-backs now is a string of make-shift options which Baines would have easily started ahead of in any tournament.

….Reid and Hoddle were terrific in ‘86 World Cup when Robson was injured and Wilkins suspended. I have a soft spot for Wilkins having played against him at Anfield when we were youngsters, such a shame he passed away so young.

Hurst, Morrissey and Husband would’ve won England caps in another era, whilst Dave Hickson told me a few times that him & John Willie Parker would’ve won caps if selection hadn’t been by Committee.

Big Nev is still the best keeper I've ever seen. His reputation is often downplayed in some quarters because he spent his best days playing for Everton.

He had no weakness in his game. He was sublime.

He was the best , so it would be a substantial amount, probably a record fee for a goalkeeper. If he had been English i think Bobby Robson would of won the World Cup in 1990.
