How good was that team?

Remember the season for bad reasons for as we went down to the 3rd division, but also remember Everton.

Was always nice to see someone beat Liverpool to the title. Didn't remember it was Kendalls last season befoe he left? Read that he left due to no games in Europe? Once he left did the team sort of get ripped apart?

Think personally we where a better side in both the 84/85 and 85/86 season myself - would have won the league in 85/86

We where 6 points clear with miles better goal difference in 85/86 with ten games left when Southall done his ankle for Wales and missed the rest of the season (and Cup final as well), Southall got injured and then the rs went on a insane run of i think 9 wins in ten whilst we picked up 20 from 30 (we where something like unbeaten in 17-18 games prior to that injury, first game he missed we went on to lose to Luton and that opened the door for the rs, without that we'd have gone to win the double that season i truly believe

I remember that 85/86 season so well. I was in the RAF, based at Brize Norton so went to the away game at Oxford, full of hope and expectation, only to lose 1-0. My boss was connected to Liverpool (wife was the daughter of a previous manager) so he got tickets for the FA Cup Final. His wife couldn't go so he took me - wearing my blue - and surrounded by thousands of Liverpool fans. Banter was wicked but all in good fun and I never felt threatened - even when Lineker put us a goal up.

My first season as a regular match goer aged 7, what a glory hunter! It was more of a team effort that season because we had lot's of injuries but fringe players came in and did a good job, Wayne Clarke was a crucial signing aswell. I remember standing up in the St End when we got the trophy against Luton and they were determined to boot us off the pitch although we eventually won 3-1.

While 84-85 was better in terms of success. The 86-87 team coped with a lot of injuries to key players. Southall, Reid, Mountfield, Van den hawe all were out long term injuries. Bracewell was out the full season. Sheedy and Sharp had periods out too. Also we sold Lineker and didn't replace him.Not many teams would of coped and still won the league , especially in those days before big squads.

Was it 84 -87 that you were at the top of your game.
Yep, absolutely. Possibly the best team in the world mate tbh. Handed Bayern Munich a thumping in '85 and they were full of West German internationals. Still didn't win as much as we'd have liked though. Liverpool did the double in '86. We obviously couldn't return to Europe after winning the league again in '87 because of the Heysel ban. Think we'd have won the European Championship that year, although many reckon our '84/'85 team was better. Probably was technically. The '86/'87 team was a bit more made up of journeymen (think Paul Power) because of injury. Had Lineker in '86 too who was top scorer with 40 goals. Still didn't win owt that year though.

86-87 was a tribute to Kendall's management skills. As said, injury upon injury and he juggled the squad to perfection.

84-85 we just put the same eleven out every week and tonked all and sundry. a majestic feeling walking down Goodison Road knowing you would win, it was just a question of how many we would score.

Mimms as GK, Power/Pointon at LB, Psycho (doing brilliantly) at CB, Adams and Langley playing (too) many games, Sheedy and Steven in CM and Clarke coming in late.

Unbelievable achievement given the circumstances interspersed with some glorious performances.

Wasn't as good as 84/85 for me but looking back that side should have won both the FA Cup and League Title three years running. And who can ever forget Peter Reid running onto the Goodison pitch with jet black hair?
