Hope you are well

Anyway got a new job happy days (y)

I have for the past few years had a company car but get an allowance of 4k a year with this job so I am just after a bit of advice on the best options

Was thinking that I would lease / buy one over three years Hopefully with some sort of repair / breakdown warranty

I will also have to tax and insure it etc

Asdvice from people in the same position would be much appreciated

Cheers in advance

Assume the 4k is taxable?

Leasing is a mugs game. Do you need to take customers in it at all? Reason I ask is, I dont get an allowance, but am self employed, and travel a lot. So I buy a presentable looking high mileage 2nd hand motor, with £7 per month Asda breakdown.

In 4 years I have had a Passat, (cost £600), blew up after 18 months, and currently have a R reg Peugout. 260000 miles, but well looked after. Cost £400. You know they will blow at some point, hence breakdown cover, but it is really good value, unless your company insist on a certain level of motor.

Will be doing a reasonable amount of travelling Roydo visiting clients etc. Trouble is if the motor breaks down I will be contractually obliged to still see clients by using a Hire car etc if required

Well £4k after tax wont get you much lease wise, in my experience, maybe I was looking at the wrong places! Cant see how you would/could be legally obliged to still meet if something goes wrong with the car, or you had an accident. If it was that vital to see them that day, I would get your employer to pay for emergency cover. After all, they are the beneficiaries of the meeting ultimately.

I dont mean buy any lump of junk. I am abit lucky as I have a mate in the trade, and he knows what I need, so just keeps his eyes open for me. Old taxis, police cars, decent models that have run for yonks and are pretty reliable. The electrics will go, need regular servicing, but I have spent £1000 on two motors in 4 years, been towed once.

Perhaps give it a go before committing to a lease?

Neville I have no idea what to offer in terms of advice about a car.

But many congratulations on the new job mate. Are you still in H&S?

I'd probably get a company car lease, as they'll service it and repair it, + give you a courtesy car if it breaks down.

Congrats on the Job and good luck

congrats nev, got a job interview tomorrow, should probably practice instead of spending the whole day on GOT reading gay love stories about gerrard and alonso.

quick question nev, would you pick a merseyside best 11, good to see what an outsider says, think there was only 1 who actually had more liverpool players in theirs.

Dunno mate

I had the option, of sorting myself a car ( they would stick on the company insurance ) and I was able to claim back 50p per mile for the first 10k and 25p afterwards.

But I estimate I do about 25k business miles a year, even though it works out cheaper on the tax front I did not want to be lumbered with a car and have to fork out for service issues etc or if i left this job that I would be left with a car on a lease that the value is depriciated due to the amount of miles I do.

I went for the company car option, its a fixed bill each month, even though the tax man is screwing me over on my previous employer making a mistake by giving the taxman a wrong value for my company car in 2010.

Congratulations on the new job Nev. Do you have to impress customers / clients with the motor you're turning up in or do you just need something reliable to get you there ?

In relation to the actual car you should go for, my advice would be a top of range (ghia/titanium) ford focus/mondeo. You get, relatively cheaply, all round leccy windows, cruise con, air con/climate control and what not. Also good on reliability and cheapness/availability of parts.

Sorry if this looks like an auto trader ad, but it worked for me.
