Europa League?

Difference between spurs and us is moyes knows how to spend and can spot a bargain. Moyes has already improved the squad with 12 million from rodwell . If we got champions league we could invest a bit into the squad and either clear our debts or save for the future . Champions league will always benefit in the long run

You miss out things like inflated players wages, getting to the CL would mean we could maybe sign players to keep us there but at what cost. Leeds tried that route and look at them now.

Spurs have got a five year kit deal with Under Armour reported at £10m pa and a deal with Autonomy at £20m for two seasons as sponsor. CL exposure is the main reason they are getting this type of money.

They didn't finish fifth though, they came fourth and were relegated to the EL because of Chelsea's win. How often will a side that finishes outside the top 4 of our country win the CL?

Three years ago players would have seen the likes of the R/S and Arsenal as a bigger proposition than Spurs. Now clubs turn them down to sign for them as they are now considered a top side.

We all know what our manager can do with a bit of money, maybe he could go better again with £20-40m net over the next few years. Also Spurs sponsorships have gone through the roof in that time.

But as others have said, Spurs are a lot stronger financially than we are. Their transfer dealings should tell you that.

Oh no I agree, I think fans think qualifying for the CL is the pot at the end of the rainbow it's not. What it could do for Everton is give us a bit more financial stability but in no way shape or form does it guarantee further success that is why i want to win trophies now.

Yeah i was only taking issue with the idea that if we qualified for the CL we'd suddenly kick on and become more of a force.

It will benefit, but it won't change the club. That's the point.

I don't think it will make us Man Utd commercially, but I do think it will make a big difference myself. Players make a lot of money outside the game too. CL football is massive where that concerned. I don't think weekly wage is the only factor when they are deciding what club to go to, or stay at.

It attracts sponsors in a different bracket with stronger brand identities which boost yours, it gives you a lot more visibility worldwide to attract new fans or re-ignite the passion of lapsed ones and more than that it would establish us as the club to support in our locality which hasnb't been the case for a long time.

I wouldn't be so sure. You get in the CL, and some players will start looking for a payrise. Jelavic would be one, i'd wager. Lets say he asks for an extra 20k a week. Over a three year contract that's an extra £3m. Then you go and sign a player for maybe £5m (conservative) to try and strengthen the squad. That player takes 50k a week, that's another £7m over a three year contract.

That's £15m alone just to sign a Jelavic price player and give one other player a pay rise. As you can see, the £20m from the CL group stages doesn't go very far.

This club has proven it is commercially inept, so i wouldn't get excited about the sponsorship opportunities from getting into the CL. We were in Europe a few seasons in a row and i didn't see any sponsorship benefit from any of that. It may not have been the CL group stages, but it was something.

I don't think the last 32 of the Uefa cup can be compared in any way shape or form. I take your point about wages though, that's the frightening bit as you have to go stick or twist for future qualifications/pay rises.

It's not foolish to use the word never or ever, you just need to stop taking things so literally !

Saying something like 'Coleman will never be good enough' is fair enough because you're talking about something you can guess at, i.e how a player's career turns out.

Saying "Everton will never win the champions league" isn't the same because you have no idea how long everton will exist as a football club, how long the champions league will exist and what the world will be like in the time they both exist. Saying that is basically saying "I'm confident enough of what the world will be like on the 35th march 3458 to predict the football scores". Which is quite a claim.

You're being very pedantic about one use of the word 'ever' tbh.

3rd biggest trophy we could possibly win.1st prem,2nd champs league,3rd europa,4th fa cup,5th coc.I would fackin love it if we won it. I know i was gutted when the shiote won it against alaves and didn`t think they where gobshiotes for celebrating it either.

Fa cup trumps the Europa

Playing in any European tournament has to give some more visibility than at present so if it has to be the Europa so be it. The problem I see with the CL is you have to be consistent in it. To garner the financial rewards a run of 4-5 years in it consistently is required thats when you start to generate the incomes and sponsorships.

But then surely if a team who already has more money than us, and then gets to the QF of the Champions League STILL can't cement a place in the top four, how would simply qualifying change Everton for a long time ?

It wouldn't !

They make more money than us, bigger brand.

Whatever they do with the money doesn't matter. It's the exposure.

Spurs arguably are a bigger name in attracting players than the RS are nowadays

Totally - surely someone at UEFA can see the current format doesn't work.

I don't think want any attention taken away from their precious C-League. Europa as straight knockout (and the C-League flunkies kicked to the curb ) would be great fun in the fall when the C-League is a total snoozefest. There really is nothing worse than group stage european footie. And even if they are hellbent on keeping the groups the least they could do is drop the knockout rounds to 16, change the group stages to top 2 qualifying and kick out the C-League.

The group stages already are top 2 qualifying
