Up the toffees
by Jade Wright, Liverpool Echo May 10 2011 ICONIC Liverpool music venue Eric’s is to re-open its doors after 31 years. The Mathew Street club, which hosted early gigs from Elvis Costello, Buzzcocks, The Clash, The Stranglers, Joy Division, The Sex Pistols and U2 will be open again by the end of the year.Owner and managing director John Lynch said: “Eric’s is a part of Liverpool’s musical history. When you look back at the greats that have played here over the years it seems staggering that it’s been closed for so long. We can’t wait to return it to its former glory. It will all be done as it was.”John and his team – musical director Ethan Allen and promoter Lee Butler – are currently hard at work painstakingly researching every detail of the original club.
good news, spent many a good night there

yeah - I guess they can never totally re-create that atmosphere, as it encompassed so much of what was the city of Liverpool at the time, mixed in with the whole generation/epoch thing.

But I hope it genuinely develops it's own uniqueness again, and becomes something special for an entirely new generation.

I have so many great memories of that place

made my one and only singing debut there, dragged on stage to sing white riot with sham 69 , after fighting in the crowd, i had a neat sprayed sham 69 /clash t shirt oinion bag combo on at the time, and was seen as a middle ground option for the warring factions sham army skins v scouse punks, only wish id have known the words, i add libbed the whole song except the white riot i want to riot bit , much to the amusement of the lads right at the front, i must say though it went well, and the cockney lads bought me a pint in honour of it, oh to be young agian.

I was too young to get in the evening gigs so I had to goto the matinee performances - Used to meet up in the Kardomah, then onto Probe, to peruse the vinyl and soak up the scene, and also to take the piss out of Pete Burns...then onto Eric's.

Memorable for me where

Stiff Little Fingers
The Ruts
Crass
Siouxsie & The Banshees
The Bunnymen
The Teardrop Explodes

and many many more

all good . undertones were very good as well, and before he was a pop idol adam and the ants put on a really good show,999, vibrators, x ray specs and ultravox were high spots as well, funny enough the ones i liked the best were the clash and were a massive let down, think it was the third and last time they played that night, the matinee was supposed to be awsome , but they seemed to just be going through the motions that night, jibbed the punk gear the week after, and went into the everton bootboy/ skinhead scene.
